Publisher's summary

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a lady in danger must be in need of rescue, but whether she wants to be rescued is up for debate—for fans of Evie Dunmore and Netflix's Bridgerton from the bestselling author of A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem!

England, 1867: Miss Poppy Delamare is living a lie. To escape an odious betrothal, she fled to London where she’s been hiding as the unassuming secretary Flora Deaver. However, when her beloved sister is accused of murder, Poppy cannot leave her to the wolves. Only a most unexpected—and unwelcome—collision interrupts her journey home . . .

Despite a rather dismal first meeting, Joshua Fielding, the Duke of Langham, has no intention of abandoning a lady in need. But he’s not above asking a favor. A fake betrothal will give Poppy and her sister the power of the dukedom and protect Langham from the society misses intent on becoming his duchess.

Yet the longer the ruse goes on, the more Poppy and Langham realize how false their first impressions were—and the less pretend their engagement feels. But before Langham can propose in truth, their search reveals a tangled web of lies and betrayals. With time running out, can Poppy and Langham find the real culprit—before Poppy becomes the next victim?

Enjoyable to say the least

I so enjoy anything that Mary Jane Wells narrates. The story was fun and clever and the mystery had some great twists and turns.

Loved it all! Mystery, passion, and crime. What more can you ask for in a HR. Mary did a wonderful job as usual.

Light Victorian Mystery w excellent narrator

Danger and Dukes continues the fun of the 2 previous books w a mystery, great dialogue, adventure, interesting and likable characters, romance/HEA and excellent narration. (Male voices were great). I am greatly enjoying this series but the Sweet and Sexy romance may be more than some Cozy Mystery readers/listeners prefer. I am hoping there will be another book in the series. These are fun escape listens while gardening or exercising. Mary Jane Wells was excellent!

A good story

I started this, then stopped. The thing that bothered me was not the story, but rather the narration. I just didn’t care for the accent the narrator gave the heroine. It seemed to be too cockney for a dukes daughter. Other than that, the story was ok.

Dukes, Danger and Deception with a Dash of Love and Passion

Manda Collins excels at creating stories of love, passion and mystery. This one brings together the Duke of Langham and Miss Flora Deaver who we first met in An Heiress’s Guide to Deception and Desire. Miss Deaver has kept her true identity from her employer and friends as we learn she is really Miss Poppy Delamare. Poppy is returning home after a two year absence when she learns her sister is being charged with the murder of her husband. The Duke is also visiting the same area to spend time as his country estate to celebrate the birthday of his grandmama. Langham offers to assist Poppy in clearing her sister’s name BUT he wants something in return, a fake engagement to keep all the ladies at bay during his visit. As one can imagine the ruse between the two provides for engaging banter and forbidden passion all while solving the mystery of who killed Poppy’s brother-in-law. Previous characters from Collins’s two previous novels make an appearance which adds to the overall story. If you like Agatha Christie and Emily Henry then you will enjoy this fun, easy and fact-paced read.

Fantastic!!

What a great story with some funny inserts. The narrator is the best I have heard to date. I am very partial to Karen Cass, but this narrator is number one in my book now. Unbelievable, very good very well acted. I will definitely look to hear her again and look for this author as well because I enjoyed the book very much.

Fun and Funny.

Such a fun listen and adorable characters. The narrator is great - natural and unforced. I'm going to listen to the rest of the series.
