Publisher's summary

A brave young gentlewoman dares to defy an infuriatingly arrogant earl. Brave and beautiful Miss Emily Wingrave knows that it will not be easy to help her older widowed sister deal with the trustee of her late husband’s estate.

The trustee is none other than the willful, arrogant Earl of Meriden, and she is determined to stop him from meddling with her sister’s struggling family. But as Emily engages the provocative Earl in a battle of wits and wills, she learns just how well armed he is: His surprising charm and seductive techniques will make her worry that she might very well be the one who surrenders.

So playful

I really enjoyed this book. It was fun. It was playful the right amount of passion. The right amount of plot twist in the narrator. Did a great job bringing all the characters to

Unexpectedly wonderful

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had so many humorous scenes that I just kept smiling! I’m not certain of the whip beating and the knuckle rapping but other than that it was lovely! Clean

Clever story line interesting stories, poor ending

Thanks to Mary Jane Wells, the characters were interesting and likeable. The story was good until the last chapter when it appeared the author just couldn't pull it all together. There was just too much "stuff" going on.

Enemies to friends

The book was full of humor, banter and a bit of mystery. But the story dragged on a bit and I thought the characters’ reactions to the death of their loved ones was unrealistic, a bit flippant. Emily was a bit of an enabler and sometimes unreasonable even though she was supposed to be the voice reason. Jack was a beleaguered guardian and I liked him, but I wondered what he saw in Emily because she was always getting in his way and made his life harder.

The funny banter between the main characters

I really enjoyed this story and of course, Mary Jane Wells is spectacular as always. This is the first Amanda Scott book I have read and I really liked it. I will look for more of her books in the future.

Good , light story

Clean, short, and sweet. I enjoyed it until the last chapter- just felt like the author couldn’t figure out how to finish it. It was rushed after spending the rest of the book going slow.

Great narrator. Mar Jane Wells is one of my favorites.

too much nonsense and not enough romance

Thank God for Mary Jane Wells' narration or this story would have been unbearable.

Domestic Violence is Continual

Despite the differences in time and values - Regency period - There is nothing romantic about Domestic Violence, As the book progressed it became more and more disgusting. Verbal abuse from Hero, Physical abuse and Threats of physical abuse. Pick up woman and throw her into freezing lake -- twice, Use of a riding whip across her bottom, etc. A BUlly is never a hero, and I see a woman who "melts" when a man chooses to violently kiss her instead of hit her as a pitiful waste. I saw no "Happily Ever After" here, just a lifetime of future domestic violence, which belongs in the genres of Tragedy and Horror not Romance.
