Rain Christiansen is settling into married life with fellow cold case detective, Daniel McKenna, and life is good. Better than good, even. But when it comes to the topic of expanding their family, Rain isn't so sure he's ready. Yes, a new addition could enrich their lives. But it could also tear down the delicate balance they've worked so hard to achieve. Do they really want to take that risk?
He'd love to brood over that a little more, but murder never takes a day off. A decade-old mystery of the missing Parker family is heating up. Most seem to think the Parkers pulled a disappearing act to get out of financial debt. It isn't before the PTU finds out the reality is far grimmer than that. It seems that Quinn stumbled upon something better left hidden. Now that Rain has stumbled upon it, too, he has to be careful that he doesn't meet the same fate.
Sometimes it amazes him how far he's come from strait-laced FBI agent who couldn't admit—even to himself—that he saw ghosts. He's done the work, learning to get some measure of control of his paranormal side. And while his relationship with ghosts may not be perfect, it's evolved into something symbiotic . . . which is a very good thing. Because in order to protect himself from the living, he might need a little help from the dead.

This book starts off on the night of Halloween with Detective Rain Christiansen being led by a new ghost - Franklin - to a remote site in the Everglades where he finds 2 large bags filled with the body parts of 2 murdered men. Unfortunately, the heads are missing, and Franklin has decided that he has given Rain enough information. Now Rain realizes that he has a new case and identifying the victims is not going to be easy. And we are off from there......
As usual, Rain and husband Detective Daniel McKenna gather the team together to start the new investigation. And, surprise, surprise, there are many more developments and all of a sudden this case becomes MUCH bigger than anyone was expecting.
What makes this series so wonderful is the way the characters have grown over the series. Rain's dry wit - and nonstop sarcasm (heck, let me just call it what it is.....snark) are a perfect fit for Daniel's calm and controlled manner. It also makes them a fantastic detective team. Over the last few books, we have seen a maturity in both of them, and a strengthening in the relationship. We can even see the growth in the dynamics of their team at the BBPD. It is not easy to be the guy who can see and talk to ghosts, yet the team they have now is rock solid. Danny is the perfect fit for Rain and this has never been so apparent as it is now. The way he can just calm Rain down with that look when Rain is spiraling and can't stop the verbal diarrhea is comic gold. It took a while to get there, but they are truly at such a strong place right now and it is SO wonderful to see.
This case was extremely interesting. I just KNEW that a certain someone was going to find themselves in a life-or-death situation and yep, this one was a doozy. We also got to learn some snippets from Danny's past which broke my heart, but the book ends with some fun and exciting news for the future.
I honestly LOVE this series and I hope that there are still going to be many, many books in the future. I listened to this mainly on audio (Shout out to Kirk Graves for another excellent job at narration!) but as I was listening, I cannot tell you how many times I realized that I had a huge smile on my face (Rain is funny, what can I say?) My husband walked by me and did a double take and asked, "Are you listening to something? What's so funny?" so I had to try to pay more attention and try to mitigate my smiles. Now is that not a great problem to have or what?
Thank you Ms. Harmon for giving us Rainstorm Moonbeam Christiansen-McKenna, and of course, for Daniel Christenson-McKenna too. The world is definitely a better place because of them :)
This series is only getting better!

I laughed out loud, teared up a couple times, cussed out loud…like a sailor (my swear jar is a Mack truck), and kept hoping for a good ending…but also for the books to keep going…
…and the incomparable Kirt Graves freaking NAILED all the characters! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I cannot WAIT for the next installment…S.E. Harmon? Hear that? That’s my official request for, like, five more books in this series. 🙏🏽
I just don’t see how you won’t love this series, too. Get it with confidence.
P. S. If you get it and don’t like it, that’s on you. Seek help. 😉
Enjoy!💖

Getting there though… lots of action, anxiety, and danger, mixed with the quirky humour and snark found in all the books of this series. Well worth the read.
Macabre mystery mixed with tons of family and love
