About this listen

Some time after Inspector Newcomen’s strange case concerning Dr. Jekyll, the occurrence of a dreadful mental deviancy begins possesses many of the cultivated and sophisticated occupants of London’s West End. For Newcomen and others, it can be no coincidence that the outbreak seems suspiciously near to the home and surgery of the doctor whose demise was of such untoward circumstances.

When theater composer Patrick “Dug” Douglas is separated from his family by the ensuing mayhem, he assembles a league of companions toward the restoration of some modicum of order. Among them are Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Harker, who bring, respectively, incomparable faithfulness and preternatural detection skills; Mr. and Mrs. Phileas Fogg, who contribute superb mathematics and a very useful airship; their faith manservant Jean Passepartout, with unmatchable energy and agility; and Dr. John Watson and biologist Ann Veronica Stanley with astute medical knowledge.

Individually, they have sought mere survival through the terrors of the epidemic. But together they seek a solution to overcome this threat to humanity and the restoration of order to their great city.

Evil guys may win the battle, but not the war.

Although I enjoyed this audiobook, I found that I needed to frequently rewind and listen to sections two or three times to understand what was happening. As the story progressed, I believe I “caught on” to the gist of what was going on, and the story seemed to progress smoothly.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I plan to buy and keep a pair of ocular protective goggles with me…..just in case.
I am glad that this audiobook had a happy ending, it made it worth the time it took to listen to it.
I would recommend you listen to this audiobook in a location you can easily rewind your device, just in case you are like me and don’t catch everything the first playing.

A Fascinating Historical Fantasy

This was my first experience with this author's work, and I was very entertained by the story. I thought it was creative when the author used various fictional characters and placed them in Victorian London to fight against an illness which was causing mental aberrations among the population. I am looking forward to more of this author's work. I enjoyed Nathaniel Priestley's narration as his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

The first third didn't convince me to continue.

I admit that I gave up one third of the way through this book. Despite the lovely voice of the reader, and recognizing “outside” characters, both fact and fiction, the main plot of an evil madness virus just didn’t capture my interest. I apologize if the book got better in the last two thirds, but I couldn’t get there.
