About this listen

Award-winning author Elizabeth George gives us an early glimpse into the lives of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James, and Lady Helen Clyde in a superlative mystery that is also a fascinating inquiry into the crimes of the heart.

Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton, has brought to Howenstow, his family home, the young woman he has asked to be his bride. But the savage murder of a local journalist is the catalyst for a lethal series of events that shatters the calm of a picturesque Cornwall village and embroils Lynley and St. James in a case far outside their jurisdiction - and a little too close to home. When a second death follows closely on the heels of the first, Lynley finds he can't help taking the investigation personally - because the evidence points to a killer within his own family.

Abridged this production may have been, but well worth the money.
Elizabeth George runs in the same literary circles as the likes of P. D. James and Ruth Randell. But the depth of emotional, in addition to intellectual, complexity she brings to her mysteries is unique.

ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREAT MYSTERY WRITERS.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one - you could not understand a word read.

What could Elizabeth George have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Her books are great - I have enjoyed other Inspector Lynley books but could not listen to this book due to the poor quality.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Derek Jacobi?

N/A - can't judge the performance since I could not hear it through the "noise" on the recording.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I have started reading Elizabeth George's book and I am absolutely hooked. She develops and expands each of the character's personality more fully in each book. I am now a devoted Lynley and Havers fan. Derek Jacobi is an excellent narrator. However, listening or reading an abridged book is, for me, a waste of time, not to mention the money invested for the audio. I read this unabridged book first, and it was fabulous! Then I listened to the abridged audio. There is just too much of the story left out. I was completely let down when the audio was over. In the future, I will only purchase the unabridged version of any book - written or audio. I truly wish that the publishers of Elizabeth George's books would go back and reproduce all of her books in the unabridged audio version. Ms. George is an excellent writer, Mr. Jacobi - wonderful narrator. Don't let the public down by down-sizing their incredible gift of telling a story.
