About this listen

I don't look for trouble. It finds me: murderous teachers, sexy supernaturals, devious plots.

My name is Dawn Rose. I was the food-scavenger for my group of outcasts in the Fringe - what used to be LA County before the Abnorms and supernaturals turned it into a hellscape. But I never expected to witness a brutal murder-by-magic.

Now I've been whisked off to Briarwitch Academy, the place where magic goes to grow. The faculty think I have an ancient untapped power. Yeah, right. Like I'm going to fit in with drunken gnomes and goth pixies. And then there are the smoldering shifter-dudes. One of them basically stalks me. The other hates me. I want them both.

I'm just trying to survive the bullies and my classes and the magical weirdos who don't think I belong here. But when evil threatens the academy, I have to stop it from reaching back home. And that whole murder thing? I know who did it. And he knows I know. And life's about to get way more complicated....

Interesting story but...

The thing that most frustrates me about this story is the lead character Dawn. She seems to have a personality disorder with being either strong willed one minute then weak and crying the next. She just stands there forever watching people get hurt with these excessive inner thoughts and does nothing. Book 2 better be different and she finds more of a backbone. For someone being so powerful she fights like a weakling as though she doesn't learn or retain anything. She gets bulldozed at every turn. Hard to continue reading a book when you can't stand the main character.

excellent

the only thing that can make this book better is if they had dual narration a male narrator for the male voices and a female narrator for female voices instead of the same narrator for everybody (personal preference)but other then that AMAZING and the narrator does an excellent job of pulling and immersing the reader in

the teen angst and readers voice are way too high

I tried for 8 chapters but just couldn't get past the shallow character and plot development.I suggest anyone buying this both listens to the sample at least twice and decide if they can listen to 8 hours of that. The reader's voice was soprano the whole time. It made my ears bleed half the time she's definitely going on my blacklist.

Horrible

I cannot stand to listen to a narration that sounds like the narrator is on the verge of sobbing any second. Maybe this is a good book but I will have to read it instead of listening to it.

Sounded promising

The story started off slow. But picked up and was interesting for a bit. However between the whining voice of the narrator and the unbelievable weakness of fmc I couldn’t finish it even with only 1 1/2 hours left. The mean girl has some unbelievable clout because her family is rich. enough to just accuse a male character of a crime and to basically have him convicted. The fmc had to out their physical relationship to prove his innocence and the whole school was flabbergasted like it’s not a college full of consenting adults. The fmc’s powers are discovered and it’s super rare which is typical but not bad however the author doesn’t really get into her training her powers and still has her stumbling into using them with not an inch of control or even understanding. The fmc also has no backbone and rarely stands up for herself. She is a survivor and tough but doesn’t actually put it into action. She’s constantly being bullied but shies away from taking any action against her bullies even when physically provoked. Don’t waste your money or credit on this book not worth it.
