About this listen

A high-stakes, pulse-pounding thriller from the best-selling author of Girl Last Seen.

A year after a brutal home invasion that left her traumatized, Cecelia, along with her husband and their three-year-old daughter, move into a new house with a complex security system that is supposed to make her feel safe.

But reality proves different as strange things begin to happen at home and the security system reveals that the house had a prior occupant: Lydia.

On her quest to discover the fate of the mysterious Lydia, Cecelia uncovers metaphorical skeletons in the closet, and she realizes that no one's secrets are safe - including her own.

Critic reviews

"Laurin crafts a Rebecca for a new generation, tapping into the old fears of domestic security, predecessor anxiety, and adding in a dash of high-tech paranoia. This is domestic suspense taken to a logical, terrifying extreme." (CrimeReads.com)

so so good

A nice refreshing change to the normal domestic thriller! A very unique story line, the characters were maybe not so developed but it doesnt take away from the story line. Definitely recommend it!!

Different in a good way.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. A story line I haven’t encountered before and truly intoxicating. I didn’t see the twist coming and felt satisfied with the ending. If you are looking for something different, this is it!

Good book,

I enjoyed this one. The premise was very good and could have been a really good book with maybe more character development or more exciting details to get your blood pumping. Not a bad book anyway.

Scary, Creepy, & A Bit Blasse

Overall it was a good book. The few quirks I had with it was that they used the women's voice to be a man's voice. Is it difficult to find a man to read audio books? The whole story revolved around living in a smart home. I certainly wouldn't have one if it were free; and I mean it. I was just hoping for a bigger ending of the smart home than the one that was given.

pretty good book. good Narration

aa always there will be no spoilers in my reviews
I actually liked it a little more than I expected. I loved the technology , it was fresh I found it to be a tiny bit predictable ( for me , I read a lot and this is my go to genre , I was surprised by a portion though ( respect earned I didn't see that coming ) however I did put it all together a little sooner than I would have liked. it was ok. though. sometimes that happens still a good book all in all.

Narration

Remember in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure when he’s playing the bellhop? Well, that’s the husband’s voice in this book. Thankfully he doesn’t have much dialogue. Other than that, the story is good and that narration otherwise great!

Frog Croaking Narration

Ok, this was a rare return for me. The story was so clever and unique I TRIED my best to make it through. But the female narrator literally did some kind of croaking sound to perform the male voice of the husband. It was like ET meets bullfrog. I was hopeful he would not be a big part in the story, because I was fairly fascinated by the idea of a "Smart Home" with a ghost - but sadly I could NOT take even the few minutes here and there where he was present. Literally shocked that Audible would use this narrator. Might be a good read, but the audible is horrible.
