Publisher's summary

From one of the most gifted and beloved storytellers of her time comes a riveting new novel of suspense where one woman’s picture-perfect island sanctuary reveals itself to be filled with dangers.…

At 29, Alison Marshall is ready to find a place to call home. With no family and no ties, she’s drifted from one small Florida town to another since high school, working odd jobs, saving hard, and building a nest egg. Once she finds the right place to settle down, she’ll know. And when she reaches beautiful Palmetto Island, she thinks she may have found it.

The small, close-knit island community seems to have everything Alison needs. On a hunch, she contacts the island’s only realtor, and learns that an old beach house is on the market. Miraculously, it’s in her budget, and Alison takes it as another sign that she’s in the right place.

At first, home is everything she hoped it would be. But as days turn into weeks, she uncovers a dark side to this supposedly peaceful haven. The locals have a secret, and once Alison discovers what it is, she faces a stark choice. She can stay and join them - or escape. But leaving brings its own risks, and Alison is starting to wonder if coming to Palmetto Island is the last mistake she’ll ever make....

Distracting narration and implausible story

I’ve always liked Fern Michaels but I think after so many books, she’s writing on rote. This implausible plot wasn’t her best. Too much in too little time for it to seem likely and the writing was somewhat elementary for Ms. Michaels.

Also, the narrator, who did have a lovely voice, did not have emotional range. In addition, she would pause mid-sentence before finishing which was very distracting.

I wanted to like this book after reading some of the reviews, but wish I would have used this credit on a different selection.

Entertaining if Unbelievable

This is like one of those teenage horror movies where all of the characters behave irrationally and totally against the reality of their character. So a little frustrating, that. But I enjoyed the setting and the pacing. The narration was fine, but lacked the diversity of characters. Listened at 2.00x just fine.

An Easy Read

This book was just what I wanted to listen to today. A little mystery without being too complicated. I was able to listen while doing other things without having to go back in order to keep up with the story. If you are looking for a complex police procedural or an edge of your seat thriller, this isn't your book. But this is an entertaining way to spend the day if that is what you're looking for.

captivating

the story was fluid and captivating although I felt the ending a bit rushed and a bit unsatisfying and nothing was said about what happened to the helpful old lady on the bus or what happened to Ally once released from the hospital.

Oh please!!!

This book is frankly ridiculous. however, it is SO ridiculous and so completely implausible that I kinda enjoyed it.
...an abused foster child with no family and no friends flees her home, gets a job as a waitress, saves enough $ from "investing" her tips that she can now purchase a house and throw hundred dollar bills around because she is just cool like that. lolll
i'll have to pass this along to all my servers down at the local diner...they must be doing something wrong.
aaaand...we have cults and psychics and bad guys driving taxis, and love, and kittens. all read at a snail's pace. omgggggg!

Gaps in the Plot

This book was okay, but I felt that there were gaps in the plot, and I definitely did not like when the flashbacks began. Also, it’s just not believable in many parts. For example, I don’t believe Allie’s abuser could easily follow the bus after threatening the driver. I also didn’t find it believable that Allie’s guardian angel from the bus was killed by her abuser. The entire abuser plot line, in fact, seemed far fetched to me. I realize that abuse does occur in some foster homes, but really? None of them show up for her graduation?? None of them even get her a card?? And then the only one who comes home in a house full of foster parents and children is the abuser?? And then no one in the family tries to stop this psychopath from following her??

The narrator’s voice is really good. The only reason I didn’t give her 5 stars is because she didn’t change her voice adequately when she was supposed to be narrating a yell or a scream.

Great listen

Fern does it again. This book held my attention throughout; and she even shares a recipe at the end.

Incrediinle narration

Stephen King can get two diabolical for me. I mostly pass his books up. But I liked the reviews on this book and I’m glad that I followed their recommendation. The narration was superb, and the story was good too. A few twists and turns, but nothing that would leave you screaming in the night. Good choice.
