About this listen

In this unique book, the reader is provided with a description of the unfolding of the adoptee's personality from birth, detailing each developmental milestone along the way, followed by different methods of healing the adoptee's wounds, including inner child work, visualizations, healing affirmations, and anger management. Every chapter includes a Myths and Realities of adoption section, a summary of the chapter and exercises to do one's own.

"Joe Soll has probably worked with adoptees and first parents more than anyone else on the planet. His approach has always involved empathy, intuition and introspection, without which dialogue runs dry. Few know the depth of the adoptee and first parent experience as well as Joe Soll, especially the dark side, where loss and loneliness reside.

Combining his experience, or perhaps we should say wisdom, with current therapeutic approaches, Joe creates an environment where growth can occur. Read his work, try it out, see how it works for you." - Robert Andersen, M.D., psychiatrist, author of Second Choice: Growing Up Adopted and A Bridge Less Travelled: Twice Visited

"Some books are so good that you can even forgive your friend for "borrowing" your copy and never giving it back. Adoption Healing … a path to recovery by Joe Soll is one such book." - Jane Jeong Trenka, Journal of Korean Adoption Studies

"As an author, teacher, and therapist, Joe Soll has brought the essence of adoption, its inherent pain to pen. His words offer counsel for the tragic separation that has occurred in the sacred union of mother and child." - Jane Guttman, DC, author of The Gift Wrapped in Sorrow.

Heartfelt, honest and a must for adoptees

This book changed my life as an adoptee. Anne’s work is honest and impactful. Life as an adoptee can leave you feeling lonely and isolated. Anne’s story helped normalise some of my own challenges. A must read/listen for anyone interested in understanding the impact adoption has on the adoptee and everyone around them.

A Must Read.....

A must “read” for anyone in the triad of adoption. Powerfully enlightening! Narrator is superb. Absolutely recommend the audio version rather than written; hearing a human voice convey these important messages & concepts is more convincing & instilling than hearing your own voice in your head reading the written word. It also affords you the time & pause to do the suggested self talk exercises without the urge to skip them & continuing on reading.

Should be required reading for Social workers!

As A Foster care survivor and adoptee. I recommend this book for those that are or know anyone within the adoption Community navigating any point the adoption journey to better understand the Entire constellation in which adoption plays out.
Thank You Joe Soll for Empowering the voices of Adoptees!

Great insight

I’m an adoptee -this book explained so many things but my only regret is that my adoptive mother would never read this book - worth the read -I’ve read it twice .

Having a hard time getting past the feminine pronouns

I would have given it 5 stars. The content is good. I just wish there was an option that has masculine pronouns to speak to the hurt little boy inside me that was traumatized by my relinquishment at birth. I gave it a good try but I’m having a hard time getting past the feminine pronouns.

Good material if you can stay awake

Would you listen to Adoption Healing again? Why?

Only if I can use a speed control - this reader would be great for an insomnia treatment book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Adoption Healing?

The book is instructional, not narrative.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Elan O'Connor?

Mike Chamberlain. He is an excellent reader, and an appropriate choice since the author is male.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book is instructional, not narrative.

Any additional comments?

The reader was easy to understand and had no accent, but she seemed to blod through this book like a sleepwalker. Perhaps she felt the intended listener would be an adopted newborn?

A MUST read book that shattered adoption myths with scientific research.

Not sure why people were negative about the performance, on such a painful subject that caused individuals the most brutal traumatic life changing experience as a newborn, I found her voice soothing, empathetic and healing.
This book made sense to me, newborns need their mother to be as close and responsive as possible, yet an adoptee is somehow fine because someone else REALLY REALLY wanted to have, care for and raise them??

Our Son

Listening to this book has solidified my belief that those who adopt are not properly prepared or educated on what the adoptee will need and how early the healing process needs to begin for all involved. Our son was 3 months old when he became a part of our family and is now 16. He has had behavior issues his entire life. As I listened to this book it was like listening to our personal story on audio and my heart breaks for him. We continue to struggle finding him the right resources and getting him to accept help. I believe in my heart that his defiance, anger and unhappiness is his yearning for his natural mother. Speaking as an adoptive mother, this is a must read for others.
