About this listen

A man of God...driven by the devil

To his parishioners, minister Matt Baker seemed a pious and good man. To his wife, Kari, he was a devoted husband and caring father. Always sunny and vivacious, Kari never questioned their frequent relocations from one small Texas Baptist church to another. Even when tragedy struck, Kari remained strong - until one day, inexplicably, she took her own life.

To friends and family, Kari's suicide made no sense - and they struggled with questions they couldn't answer. Why couldn't Matt hold a job with any one church? Why did he cut off all contact with Kari's devastated parents soon after her death? And who was the blonde companion he began appearing with just days after the funeral? But it would take a team of investigators and dogged determination to bring Matt Baker's dark secrets to light - revealing a shocking history of lies, infidelity, cruelty, and sexual obsession that may have led a serial predator cloaked in God's word to commit murder.

Gripping Story!

Didn't want to stop listening to this at the end of the day and thought about it when I wasn't listening to it. Am I the only one who was pissed off all the way through? At this evil bastard, his parents and all the incompetent morons who almost let him get away with his heinous crimes! A good story makes you feel something and this one made me feel a lot! I loved it.

Good True Crime story

Truly heartbreaking story. I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator but I still enjoyed it

Absolutely unputdownable

I spent an entire day listening to this fascinating, insightful and extraordinarily well researched tale of a man who exemplifies hidden evil. Not for nothing is Satan called “the father of lies”… the battle between love and evil in this book, makes for a riveting tale. And the narrator is perfection.
Off to get another Kathryn Casey book!

Deadly little secrets

It was one of the most spellbinding books I have ever had the pleasure of listening too, great suspense, and a heart felt desire to hear that justice was done. Terrific gut wrenching experience!

Excellent explanation of the "true crime" story

A tragic story for all concerned, covered very well by this author in explaining what happened and the effects on those involved. I wasn't fond of the southern accents used and took me some time to adjust to narration, but still an excellent audio.

pur÷ evil

As in most crimes against women it took to longer to bring to trial. Too many men in power easiily dismiss what is obvious because it is a women at the center.

Evil at its worst

Think it was a bit long and kind of dragged. Time between murder and trial was too long

Devil in Disguise

Any additional comments?

Matt Baker is a perverted preacher. His wife Kari was loving and trusting, while he was propositioning women for years. This is a fascinating story of their life and her death. I could not stop listening and stayed up all night.

I was so intrigued by the portrayal of these characters that I googled Matt and Kari Baker so that I could see what they looked like. She was so pretty and vivacious. It broke my heart to see her. I also found a 48 hours presentation on You Tube about this story that interviewed Matt. He is such a liar!!

Absolutely Engrossing!

I listened to this book when it first came out, and I remember when the story was on the news. Lately I have been listening to True Crime books, and listened to this again. It was better than I remember. In my top 5. Beautifully narrated. This was the first I’ve heard Gillian Vance. She’s wonderful. The story is very sad. And it’s hard to understand why the mistress kept silent for so long. With so little police work done on the case, it’s pretty amazing that the case was finally opened and they found a prosecutor willing to try the case. Fascinating but sad story. Especially the way it affected the Cari’s daughters. Listened to in one big Binge. Couldn’t turn it off. Excellent!
