Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of The Good Neighbor comes a gripping thriller about an engagement party gone fatally awry.

Imagine your closest friend utterly betraying you. Years later, when she seeks forgiveness, you invite her to your engagement party as a gesture of reconciliation. But seething hostilities rise to the surface, ruining everyone’s evening. After an awful night, your friend’s battered, lifeless body is found at the bottom of a rocky cliff.

Newly engaged Marissa Parlette is living this nightmare. She should be celebrating her upcoming wedding, but she can’t shake the image of her friend lying dead on the beach. Did she fall? Was she pushed? Or did she take a purposeful step into darkness? Desperate for answers, Marissa digs deep into the events of the party. But what she remembers happening after nightfall now carries sinister implications: the ugly sniping, the clandestine meetings, the drunken flirtations. The more she investigates, the more she questions everything she thought she knew about her friends, the man she once trusted, and even herself.

Bestselling author A. J. Banner keeps readers on a razor-sharp edge in this intricately plotted novel of psychological suspense...in which nothing is as it seems.

The ending

Great story. Couldn’t stop listening, but….THE ENDING! I need to know more! So many questions.

Meh

The performance makes me uninterested in the book. I made it to about 2 minutes.

Book was ok

The book was not bad but the main character was often infuriating, at least to me, with regards to her assumptions and ways of thinking. I did like the surprise ending though, it's never who you think it is.

Great Book, kept me interested until the end

great book, didn't lose interest or figure out the twist way beforehand. I would recommend the book.

Twisty goodness!

The writing was a little lacking. I got tired of hearing “it’s a long story” while I listened to this audiobook. But it kept me guessing till the very end- an excellent trait in a thriller. I can’t say I liked many of the characters at all, but that’s ok, too. Melissa was a great lead and her narrative and persistence were excellent.
Id recommend this to anyone interested in speech therapy, murder mystery, family drama, and medical reading (nursing, first responders, doctors alike).
Trigger warning for abusive relationships, FYI.

Had potential, but in the end...ehh

Story started strong with a decent pace then it slowed considerably. Guess I was expecting more (complex story and twists) based on some of reviews. Marissa and Nathan lacked depth and annoyed me. The most annoying thing was the narrator’s “male” voices. It was really awkward and made the characters sound like idiots. And some of Nathan’s dialogue... c’mon now. “I love you like crazy.”... really? Laugh out loud moment. I guess can’t complain. It didn’t cost any $ , just some hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Good

A fast paced mystery. I was entertained but didn't have that "great book" feel for me. That said it was a quick read and nothing was wrong with the story. Made a wonderful distraction from housework. The narrator for this book is Teri Schnaubelt. Teri has a great voice and I really enjoyed listening to her read this book. I was gifted this book with the understanding that my review would be honest.

A Cliff Without A Hanger

A nice who done it with a few good suspects except the one that counted. A lot of dialog devoted to setting, clothing, and the protagonist’s interior thoughts. Some actions by the protagonist seemed irrational and inconsistent with her character to the extent that was developed. May take a few minutes to become used to narrator’s attempt to portray different characters- voice changes are subtle. Overall a pleasant bedtime tale.

10/10 Did not disappoint!

I love when a book doesn't take 10 chapters to get to the main theme if the book. A. J. does a great job of making it nearly impossible for you to put her books down. she get to the point without loss of details or leaving gaps in her storylines. If you haven't read any of her other books I highly recommend you try them out.

I loved how this book developed through the storyline and ended abruptly, but without leaving you clueless. That's an art not many have mastered and I've seen it done poorly before, but not this book. I hope she writes a mini novella based on this book as I kind of fell in love with characters because they're so complex!

I highly recommend this book.
