About this listen
Anne Rice and J. K. Rowling’s worlds collide in this exhilarating and pause-resisting debut contemporary fantasy novel. Enter the Phoenix Chronicles universe today and prepare yourself for an action packed fantasy thriller with earthshaking mystery and apocalyptic dangers. Packed with mystical wonders, vampires, werewolves, wizards, demons, and gods, this story will captivate you and leave you wanting more.
Follow the story of young, apprehensive student, Kristian Wallace as he finds himself thrust back into a world he had previously rejected. After leaving behind the mystery, magic, and mysticism of the “Order of Light”, Kristian is once again on a dangerous mission against supernatural forces. Returning to confront the challenges bestowed upon those who are chosen to blend with a magical entity, known as a Phoenix; Kristian uses the special powers endowed to him, as he soon comprehends the reality that he can no longer hide from his destiny.
When the mission takes a much darker path, with deadly consequences, a far more sinister plot is revealed. Kristian troubled by echoes of his past, must use all his abilities to stay alive and to prevent an apocalyptic future that threatens to destroy everything he holds dear.
Alone in the Light is an introduction into the fantastical and intricate universe of the Phoenix Chronicles. This standalone novel sets out the beginnings of a six-part saga, one filled with magic, peril, and endless intrigue.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Story
Have you ever felt like there was something inside of you pushing your actions? A dormant beast, so to speak. I know it sounds crazy. But, that’s the best way I could describe how I’ve felt for a long time. I thought it was normal, some animal part of the human brain that lingered from evolution. But, this is the story of how I learned I wasn’t exactly human, and there was a world underneath our own where all the things that go bump in the night live. And, that my beast was very real indeed.

Vampire's , Warewolves, and Jackals!
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
The story revolves around Kristian and his struggle to basically stop the world from ending while coming to terms with his emotions. As far as YA Urban Fantasy goes I found the MC and most of the other characters were well enough fleshed out including Johnathon the Director of the good guys who shows his humanity. The baddies for lack of a better word were fit for purpose but a little more fleshing out wouldn't hurt.
Secondly the narration
Although I usually associate an Irish accent with old or medieval fantasy I found it fitted in well with the story and gave it a nice charm. I have listened to a few of Andrew's books and find that his accent is suitable for fantasy or romance but I wouldn't fit it in with other genres. I was skeptical that it would suit as an Urban fantasy generally has a more modern feel but to be honest with vampires and phoenixes et all the accent was spot on.
If I could I would give it 4.5 Stars Overall as the baddies could have done with a bit of fleshing out and although the accent was fine I would still prefer an English or American accent but that's just my preference.
Surprisingly interesting

Narrator, Andrew McDermott did a wonderful job! He has a very soothing voice and I think his accent is perfect for this genre. I enjoyed hearing his versatility when it came to the Asian characters. Well done! I will admit that I ran this book at 1.25 speed just to pick it up a bit, though. It helped the 13+ hours go by faster but didn’t take away from his performance. 😉
Well worth a credit! I’m very much looking forward to book two!
