About this listen

A cookbook and culinary memoir about growing up as the daughter of revered chef/restaurateur Alice Waters: a story of food, family, and the need for beauty in all aspects of life.

In this extraordinarily intimate portrait of her mother - and herself - Fanny Singer, daughter of food icon and activist Alice Waters, chronicles a unique world of food, wine, and travel; a world filled with colorful characters, mouth-watering traditions, and sumptuous feasts. Across dozens of vignettes with accompanying recipes, she shares the story of her own culinary coming of age and reveals a side of her legendary mother that has never been seen before. A charming, smart translation of Alice Waters' ideals and attitudes about food for a new generation, Always Home is a loving, often funny, unsentimental, and exquisitely written look at a life defined in so many ways by food, as well as the bond between mother and daughter.

Having read a lot of “why” food books from the likes of Michael Pollan and Dan Barber, I was looking for an audiobook that discussed some actual “how” to cook. There aren’t many “cookbooks” in audio form that get rave reviews and wouldn’t be totally boring to listen to. I saw this was highly reviewed and took a listen.

I absolutely adore this writer. The way she describes food and flavor and scent makes me jealous that I don’t have the vocabulary to express the same mutual sentiments. The way she described her mom is hopefully how my son will describe me some day. How incredibly proud her mother must be.

Enjoyable listen from beginning to end. Highly recommend.

Love the story but oh all of the recipes. Have tried many and each are, to me, a wonderful delicious dish.

This book is read by the author. She is not a professional reader and it shows. She basically reads in an uninflected monotone. Intermittently she seems to decide that a given passage needs some emotion or emphasis and then she dials some in. But otherwise it's just as if she's reading a list of words from a page, and as rapidly as she can. The publisher would have done better insisting that a professional reader do the job. There are so many good ones, and then this book could have been done justice.

I returned this title after 10 minutes, because the author’s voice was really hard for me to enjoy. Heavy vocal fry.

I was looking forward to this book, so will buy the paper copy and read it instead.
