About this listen

A woman delves into a centuries-old murder to find the truth behind her self-destructive behavior in a powerful novel about love, loss, and healing by the bestselling author of An Unfinished Story and The Stars Don’t Lie.

Unable to catch a break in life or love as she approaches thirty, Charli Thurman sees red lights at every crossroads. And given the Thurman family’s tumultuous history, she knows things will only get worse, unless she can break the cycle and figure out where—and when—it all went wrong.

Charli is skeptical when her best friend introduces her to a “soul reader” who specializes in generational trauma. But during family constellation therapy with the guru, Charli experiences an inexplicable memory of terrible violence. Whatever happened in the past, it created an imbalance that’s still in the Thurman blood.

When Charli’s research leads her to Winchester, England, she meets a charming pub owner named Noah, whose own family history is similarly twisted. As the mystery deepens around a damaged inheritance and a tragic death, Charli is resolved to find the truth—and create the fresh start she has been hoping for her whole life.

A way out of the past

I enjoyed the narration, It was easy to follow and the dual times and point of views were very easy to distinguish. The concept behind the story is interesting, that the past can affect the people of today. Of course this centers around a tragedy and that colors how the generations after go through life. Charlie needed to find out the story in order for her mind to let it go and help her family move on towards the future. She also had to let go of her own personal demons to see the future she could have.

Wow!

I loved this story. It was great how it went back and forth between Charli in the present and Miles on the past.

The Secret

Not quite a believable lead character, but a nicely woven story with a unique premise. Good prose. Good story pace.

A Great Book and Easy Enjoyable Listen

Wow! If you are into genealogy and how generational trauma/action and inaction is passed down through our bloodline, this is the novel for you. As several people have pointed out, the first few chapters are a little slow, but once Charli arrives in Costa Rica the story takes off. I simultaneously read and listened to the audio. Usually I listen at 1.5 speed (sometimes 1.7) but this book was like sitting in a hot bath on a cold winter day…I wanted to soak up every moment and slowed down the entire experience. I cannot think of anything this book is missing. The story tied up nicely at the end…the last few sentences could not have been more perfect. Thank you, Boo Walker for creating such a lovely book. I look forward to reading more from you.

The blending of then and now

I like believing in the influence of, and possibilities of better understanding our ancestors, having a connection through time.

Fantastic Everything!

This story had everything which made it hard to ever put it down. You can read the summary then imagine it ten times better. Different centuries and two families affected by two people in love who just wanted to be together.
Two comical moments stand out to me as I wasn’t expecting them. One involved a pair of panties and a Boo Who snuck in.
Life is always a mystery, coincidences (maybe but maybe more), true love and struggles and so is this story. Read it as it will make you happy!
