About this listen

A foster mother must contend with the emotional turmoil of her new blended family in a heartfelt novel of hope and second chances by New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde.

Maggie Blount, divorced mother of two and California physician, puts her private practice on hold when disaster strikes. Doctors on Wheels takes her and Alex—Maggie’s professional and romantic partner—wherever they’re needed. After rolling into rural Louisiana in the wake of a category five hurricane, Maggie immediately bonds with two sisters and their puppy, all orphaned by the storm. It’s enough to break Maggie’s heart, and she’s not leaving them behind.

Feeling blessed and looking forward to their new foster home in affluent Vista del Mar—a world apart from the one they’ve known—Jean and Rose are polite, appreciative, and humble. Frankly, they're the polar opposite of Maggie’s own self-involved teenage daughters, Willa and Gemma, who resist this intrusion by strangers into their privileged lives. Soon enough, Maggie’s new blended family is in chaos.

Teaching Willa and Gemma about gratitude and empathy will be hard enough. Maggie must also admit her own role in their entitled upbringing, undo the damage, and anticipate the needs of all four girls and a puppy, all amid faraway natural disasters and those closer to home.

Critic reviews

“Prolific and popular novelist Hyde (Life, Loss, and Puffins) produces another emotional roller coaster…A complex human story told in Hyde’s straightforward style, with plenty to discuss and disagree over in book groups.”Library Journal

“Hyde’s writing, the dialogue, the events and the messages are powerful and engaging. She demonstrates that through kindness and compassion, we can change a small piece of the world.”—Bookreporter

Another good story by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Not the best of her stories, but very solid and worth the credit.

It would be hard to give more praise to Catherine Ryan Hyde than I think she deserves. I have listened to more of her books than from any other author. This is the 24th of her books I have enjoyed, beginning with Boy Underground, which I added to my library in March, 2022.

The breadth of her imagination is impressive. Each of her creations has been quite unique in its own way, but the common aspect I have found among all of them is their enjoyability. The characters are all very well developed, and the reader/listener comes to know them much as one would a real-life friend.

None of these 24 books I have heard has ever caused me to consider discarding it, which I think is quite a testament to their consistent quality; I don't believe any other sequence of 24 books from various other authors has been without at least one disappointment or abandonment.

Thank you, Catherine, for your imaginative and creative work. I appreciate you very much, and I look forward to enjoying more of your future creations!!

Another satisfying winner!

It is a wonderful story! I think Jean and Rose were a little bit too good to be true especially after all they went through. However the story is great. I enjoyed every minute. Narration was very good.

Refreshing

Overall an enjoyable read. The hearts of the adopted girls really shows no matter how much adversity is down to some their hearts can still be compassionate. I would have liked more dialog between the 4 girls after the biological daughters realized their beginning change of hearts. The ending was a bit abrupt
