About this listen
"In Nourishment a wise observer of the land and the animals becomes transformed to learn the meaning of life."—Temple Grandin
**Reflections on feeding body and spirit in a world of change, adapted from the book Nourishment, read by author Fred Provenza**
Animal scientists have long considered domestic livestock to be too dumb to know how to eat right, but the lifetime research of animal behaviorist Fred Provenza and his colleagues has debunked this myth. Their work shows that when given a choice of natural foods, livestock have an astoundingly refined palate, nibbling through the day on as many as fifty kinds of grasses, forbs, and shrubs to meet their nutritional needs with remarkable precision.
In his book Nourishment, Provenza presents his thesis of the wisdom body, a wisdom that links flavor-feedback relationships at a cellular level with biochemically rich foods to meet the body’s nutritional and medicinal needs. Provenza explores the fascinating complexity of these relationships as he raises and answers thought-provoking questions about what we can learn from animals about nutritional wisdom.
On a broader scale, Provenza explores the relationships among facets of complex, poorly understood, ever-changing ecological, social, and economic systems in light of an unpredictable future.
This original audiobook program has been adapted from this groundbreaking research and book.
Praise for Fred Provenza’s Nourishment:
“Nourishment is a conversation between science, culture, and a greater spiritual or cosmological umbrella.”—Montana Public Radio
“Nourishment will change the way you eat and the way you think.”—Mark Schatzker, author of The Dorito Effect
“An absolutely fascinating topic, engagingly written. Fred Provenza will wholly up-end everything you think you know about what you are supposed to eat and why. Nourishment should be the first book read by every student of nutrition.”—Nicolette Hahn Niman, author of Defending Beef
“Once again, Fred Provenza shows he is one of the freshest and most insightful thinkers about the role of herbivores (and omnivorous humans!) in our food and land management systems. His clear evolutionary thinking is matched by his keen powers of observation of ecological interactions. This book is a landmark contribution.”—Gary Paul Nabhan, author of Mesquite and Food from the Radical Center

David R. Montgomery and Anne Bikle take us far beyond the well-worn adage to deliver a new truth: the roots of good health start on farms. What Your Food Ate marshals evidence from recent and forgotten science to illustrate how the health of the soil ripples through to that of crops, livestock, and ultimately us. Navigating discoveries and epiphanies about the world beneath our feet, they reveal why regenerative farming practices hold the key to healing sick soil and untapped potential for improving human health.

Story
Raised as a fourth-generation farmer, when Will Harris inherited White Oak Pastures he was a full-time commodity cowboy who played hard and fast with every tool the system offered–chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, and more. His ancestors had built a highly profitable, conventionally run machine, but over time he found himself disgusted with the excess, cruelty, and smalltown devastation this system entailed. So he bet the farm on forging a different way of doing things. One that works with nature not against it, and bridges the quickly widening delta between consumers and their food.

Story
Much like nature, this audiobook is both simple and complex. Zietsman has taken great care to create both a simple technical guide as well as a philosophic declaration about complex human and environmental nuances, all in one volume. Several years from now, many will look back upon this book as foundational to the restoration of—and relationships between—man, cattle, and veld. Zietsman puts forth a much-needed critique of man and his actions over the past century as well as personal stories as contra-example to the narratives that have dominated the ranching world.

Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Story
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation's number-one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs. Instead we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor - the tastes we crave - and the underlying nutrition.

Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

He's the first son of a shepherd who was the first son of a shepherd himself; his family have lived and worked in the Lake District of Northern England for generations, further back than recorded history. It's a part of the world known mainly for its romantic descriptions by Wordsworth and the much-loved illustrated children's books of Beatrix Potter. But James' world is quite different. His way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand.

Science is beginning to understand that our thinking has a deep and complicated relationship with our eating. Our thoughts before, during, and after eating profoundly impact our food choices, our digestive health, our brain health, and more. Yet most of us give very little thought to our food beyond taste and basic nutritional content.

Story
Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Story
You are just 10% human. For every one of the cells that make up the vessel that you call your body, there are nine impostor cells hitching a ride. You are not just flesh and blood, muscle and bone, brain and skin, but also bacteria and fungi. Over your lifetime, you will carry the equivalent weight of five African elephants in microbes. You are not an individual but a colony. Until recently, we had thought our microbes hardly mattered, but science is revealing a different story, one in which microbes run our bodies and becoming a healthy human is impossible without them.

I hope the producers read this. This is a fantastic book in terms of content and performance, but every chapter cuts off abruptly before its end. It became frustrating. We don’t even get to hear the final lines of the book. Hopefully you will rerelease a version that is complete.

Great but surprising shift in focus
Great insights and perspective with revelatory findings on wisdom alive in all living things. The science and experiences he shares are excellent, and some of his theological and metaphysical musings are inspiring and well crafted… but those latter things ended up taking over the whole last few hours of the book- there was no real tie-in back to the main topic and threads of the book in its earlier focus.
Every chapter end is cut short for some reason.

Everyone should read this book
This book contains so much wisdom from so many different aspects of life. My life and perspective is surely changed as a result of reading it. The only issue is that it cuts off at the end of some of the chapters and moves to the next, like the very ends of a few audio files for the chapter were cut off and I didn't get to hear the last thoughts in them.

Fascinating, & a little wide ranging
Love the book, but as mentioned by another reviewer, the topic of nutrition/nourishment is not tied back into the concluding chapters. I do appreciate the concept of spiritual and metaphysical “nourishment” but expected more concrete conclusions and strategy about both human and livestock nutrition and grazing.
Also, as mentioned, the chapters are all abruptly cut short for some reason. This seems to be an annoying audio quality control issue. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Otherwise maybe just get the kindle or paperback versions.
Regardless of all that, I really enjoyed listening to the author narrate his own book, and I imagined hearing wisdom filled stories being told to me by a grandfather elder figure, of which there are far too few in our world today. Thanks Fred for sharing your wisdom with us!

Thanks John for pointing me to Fred.
A beautiful book that I have been citing since beginning reading it, to friends, to family, to colleagues, to that person you get chatting to at the local food store about the importance of fat and the meaning of life! This is getting a second listen. This is a book I needed right now. Which fits with Fred looking back on one’s life and seeing connections and order like some divine script. Thank you to John Kemph and his Regenerative Agriculture podcast who introduced me to Fred Provenza and so many other extraordinary minds.

Dissappointed
Dr. Provenza is a fantastic thinker and writer. I read the hard copy of Nourishment when it first came out and loved it, it's one of my all-time favorite books. I wanted to listen to the book again read by the author. The audiobook is quite different from the hard copy, and not what I was hoping for. Not only that, but every chapter is cut off. The conclusions for every chapter are cut off. I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks, and this is the only one that has ever done that. I think a full or partial refund is warranted. Nothing against the author or the content of the book. All I can say is this is very disappointing.
