About this listen

For fans of All the Light We Cannot See and The Tattooist of Auschwitz!

Angels of the Resistance brings to life a deadly-effective and deeply moving sisterhood.” —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code

From the bestselling author of
The Flight Girls comes a story inspired by true events, about courageous women who risked everything for country, for family, and for each other.

Netherlands, 1940

As bombs fall across Europe, fourteen-year-old Lien Vinke fears that the reality of war is inescapable. Though she lives a quiet life with her mother and older sister, Elif, in their small town of Haarlem, they are no strangers to heartache, having recently suffered an immeasurable loss. And when the Nazis invade the Netherlands, joining the Dutch resistance with Elif offers just the atonement Lien craves.

Trained to shoot by their late father, the sisters are deadly wolves in sheep’s clothing. They soon find themselves entrenched in the underground movement, forging friendships with the other young recruits, and Lien even discovers a kindred spirit in a boy named Charlie. But in wartime, emotional attachments are a liability she can’t afford, especially when a deeply personal mission jeopardizes everything she holds dear—her friendships, her family, and her one shot at redemption.

“This story of two teenage sisters who risk everything to join the Dutch Resistance is a dazzling tour-de-force.” —Karen Robards, bestselling author of The Black Swan of Paris

Historical novel. Worth re-reading.

Though a work of fiction, this novel is about one small cell of the WW2 resistance movement in Holland. It is closely based on real people, places, dates, and events, and what is known about them. This is a very interesting, well-written, and enjoyable--as well as horrifying--glimpse into what Nazi tyranny did to the local populace, and to the heroic individuals working against it.

Great story

The story kept me wanting to listen even longer even though I didn’t care for the narrator.

Research and authenticity

This story is engaging but contained language & circumstances that weren't 1940-45. Some voices annoying.

Courage Like I've Never Seen

This story, though difficult to listen to at times, was a story that I couldn't STOP listening to. The narrator was perfect for the sister who was telling the story. I learned things about the German occupation in the Netherlands that I had no knowledge of, prior to reading this story. I recommend Angels of the Resistance to anyone who likes history, and enjoys a book based on fact, where the specific characters were fictional. The courage of these young sisters was unbelievable and awe inspiring. I rated this book a 5 in all areas.

Beautiful story

I had never heard of or studied the Dutch suffering at the hands of the Germans, and did not know they were occupied during the war. This was a great story of two brave young girls who worked courageously with the Resistance to help defeat the fascists. Although fiction, the story was based on the lives of two real Dutch girls.

Good read

My only negative was the the editorial decision to use “me” when “I” was the grammatical choice and not stilted. It just grated every time it was used in the narrative although I understand the use in dialogue

Nice story with lots of interesting characters and details. A little too predictable for me unfortunately!

Angels of the resistance

Great story it held my interest throughout, listening to the tales and the different adventures that the characters encountered feeling sorry feeling that emotion feeling the sadness that they felt as it was projected on us as the authors writing flowed
