About this listen

A story of resilience and loss, love and family, Mark Oshiro's Anger Is a Gift testifies to the vulnerability and strength of a community living within a system of oppression.

Six years ago, Moss Jefferies' father was murdered by an Oakland police officer. Along with losing a parent, the media's vilification of his father and lack of accountability has left Moss with near crippling panic attacks. Now, in his sophomore year of high school, Moss and his fellow classmates find themselves increasingly treated like criminals in their own school. New rules. Random locker searches. Constant intimidation and the Oakland Police Department stationed in their halls. Despite their youth, the students decide to organize and push back against the administration.

When tensions hit a fever pitch and tragedy strikes, Moss must face a difficult choice: give in to fear and hate or realize that anger can actually be a gift.

This powerful audiobook is a must-listen for every American who places critical value on social justice.

TW for Police violence, racism. Fantastic and timely story, but super hard and heart breaking.

Beautiful and heart breaking

Mark Oshiro has written a masterpiece, at times reminiscent of Cory Doctorow's Homeland, but much more of the moment and real.

Mark's narration is as phenomenal as his story telling (as anyone who follows him on YouTube already knows), and the audio version is well worth picking up.

After having my heart ripped out by this incredible story, I truly can't wait to read (or hear) what Mark writes next.

I Love This Book

Best book ever. I selected to read this for my protest class and actually enjoyed it and I hardly ever enjoy books that are for school. lol.

Important Message, Terrible Delivery

I wanted so badly to love this book. And maybe I would have if I had read it instead of listened. I appreciate the author tried to do their best by narrating an obviously nuanced and important story by himself, but I really, really, REALLY wished he would have hired someone else to do the reading. You would think that as the author he would be able to read this book exactly as he needed to, but he was just so wrong. The intonation was completely off, breaths at the wrong time, oddly questioning tones at the end of sentences, and the voices he tried to use for different characters were cringe worthy. This book is better than it's performance, but the performance is bad enough to make it hard to finish.

Good, not great.

The story was ok. Although, I didn't find as moving as most reviewers before me.
