Publisher's summary

Antidote is about the very real danger that, in the future, bacteria can be used as weapons of terror. In this story, a group of Soviet Georgians develop a strain of common bacteria and create an epidemic against the Russian High Command. Robert Cook, a microbiologist in La Jolla helps track down the perpetrators through France, Moscow, and the Georgian republic. The novel features the sights, sounds and tastes of those lands, while bringing in enough science to interest the lay listener who likes a galloping thriller...

It is a very well written mystery thriller

Antidote presents and explores a very real danger to the world in the terms of microbiology and bacteria. Not only the creation of such a deadly danger but one that many would not hesitate to use as a weapon to exact punishment or revenge or to provide one with a greedy style temperament the means to world domination.

Robert Cook is a techno cop and microbiologist. He is charged with discovering what and who released a deadly strain of staph infection that renders the victim dead within a matter of days. There is no known cure and no one has the slightest idea of where it originated. Through his contacts and sleuthing he discovers the likely culprit and pursues him. After learning the reasoning behind the theft of the deadly strain of staph and how it happened to be “released” Cook makes political stand that would leave most politicians quaking in their boots!

It is a very well written mystery thriller. It is believable and provides enough fodder for everyone who reads this book to have nightmares for a lifetime! Realistically written, attention to detail and character development is superb. I am not one to read a lot of mystery thrillers such as this but found it to be interesting and attention holding. It was captivating to see how easily one’s plan (incidentally a plan implemented for good) can turn into a major nightmare and cost hundreds of people their lives. It makes me wonder how truly accurate and close to the truth this book is in today’s world.

John Patrick Lonergan did an excellent job researching and writing this book. While it could easily have been written in a scientific style, he did a great job at writing it in layman terms.

Dan Lawson did an excellent job at narrating the book. His voice was just as I pictured Robert Cook as sounding. He became Robert Cook by the end of the book.

ACX provided a clear production of Antidote, one free of distracting noises and glitches.

Immersive and Interesting

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, and I have. You can see Mr.Lonergan's complete understanding of the subject matter (germ warfare) from the beginning.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Antidote?

The crossing into Georgia from Russia.

Which character – as performed by Dan Lawson – was your favorite?

His voices for the computers and his Slavic accents were wonderful, but my favorite was Robert Cook. I could feel his life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me a bit nervous.

Any additional comments?

This book started off kind of slow; both the writing and the narration. But once the ground work was laid and the story really got going (around Chapter 4), I felt as though I had been transported to another life. Very good!
