In 1905, Maurice Leblanc introduced his gentleman-burglar in the story "L'Arrestation d'Arsène Lupin". Shortly thereafter, the stories were collected as one single volume. In these charming adventures, Lupin orchestrates a myriad of extravagant heists in the very face of the determined Inspector Ganimard.

Story
The first of Maurice Leblanc's collections about his devilish, debonair rogue, Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar presents eight dazzling short stories that display some of Lupin's greatest thefts and escapes. Lupin robs from within prison, leaves its walls with ease, steals priceless diamonds from the rich and outwits the greatest detective of all: Sherlock Holmes. Witty, cunning, and taunting, Lupin is a genius on the wrong side of the law, although his noble code of ethics and Robin-Hood-like ways often see him use his talents for good.

Berkeley, California, 1933. It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

great collection...
I particularly enjoy the adventures with Sherlock Holmes (Herlock Sholmes). Two masters mentally crossing swords in the streets of Paris. Great work.

Key to the evolution of the detective story
Arsene Lupin is a key figure in the development of the modern mystery, but he's unknown by many in the English speaking world. This set of stories, ranging in quality, brings the anti-hero to life relatively successfully. Of course if things like "knowing the name of the translator" or "understanding the publication history" are important to you, this is not the best choice. Because there is zero context provided. But if you just want to immerse yourself in France's answer to Sherlock Holmes (featured here as "Herlock Sholmes"), this is a fun and easy way to do it.
Tip: I listened straight through, which might have been a little too much Arsene Lupin at once. You might want to break it up into smaller sized bites.

average story. A bit tiresome really.
struggled to finish. don't really get a feel of arsene lupin, he remains a shadowy figure without the connection that one gets with Sherlock Holmes.
