Bunny girls do not live in libraries. This is simply common sense. And yet, that’s exactly where Sakuta finds one in the wild. More bewildering is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, a girl one year older than Sakuta, famous at their school for her acting career even though she’s currently on break. To top it all off, it seems like no one else in the library can see Mai at all, no matter what she does or...wears.

Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou is Seiren Private Academy’s “solitary princess.” She’s a half-Russian beauty with silver hair, at the top of her class, student council accountant, and…completely unapproachable. For some reason, she’s also taken on the responsibility of reprimanding the slacker who sits next to her in class. Masachika Kuze is constantly frustrating her by falling asleep, forgetting his textbooks, and just being an overall unexemplary student. Or at least, that’s how it looks from the outside. She may put on a tough act, but she doesn’t mind Masachika as much as others would think.

The epitome of fear and terror, they can summon floods on a whim, conjure balls of fire out of the air, or even destroy entire countries overnight. Incur their wrath, and no one is safe. At least, that's what everyone thinks, and it's the very reason they all want Siasha dead. After yet another violent battle for her life, she teams up with Zig, a mercenary, and they depart for unknown lands to find somewhere she can live in peace. But is the pair any match for the lost magic and vicious monstrosities that lie ahead?

Story
For generations, a shrine has stood in the mountain village of Kadono, and for each generation the shrine has had an Itsukihime--its shrine maiden--and the maiden has had her guardian. During the Edo period, a young man named Jinta protects the town and the Itsukihime. When he confronts a strange demon in the nearby forest, it tells him that in the distant future a Demon God will threaten all people, everywhere, and it claims that the Demon God's rise to power springs from this very time and place, in the village of Kadono.

Hmmm
So far, I have read two other works by this author and found both of them to be moving and masterful. However, no book can resonate with everyone, and this one definitely fell short for me. I think the main problem with it for me is one simply of cultural differences. In general, Japanese culture tends to favor unity and indirectness. As such, it gives rise to the phenomenon highlighted in this book, which is sort of a cross between peer pressure, pack mentality, and bullying. Essentially, in an effort to fit in, sometimes a student who makes a mistake or does not fit in will become shunned and picked on, and no one comes to their defense because that would make them different too, and as such, open themselves up to the same treatment and no longer being one of the group.
As a Westerner who is at least passably aware of all this, I can logically follow along with the story but emotionally and experience-wise, it just reads like a classroom full of psychopaths and a boy who slowly starts to see that, hey, maybe being a psycho is a bad thing.
I think it is still a good book and the female lead character is super interesting. The male lead, well, you pretty much want to hit him with a stick throughout the story but then again, that's the point. Overall, I think it is worth a read but if you are not a native Japanese person then don't expect it to move you much as it probably should.
