About this listen

Sarah Langley returns to her hometown during the Christmas season, a time when joy is sung in carols and jingles, and hope is offered to all who believe. But for a newly divorced woman who feels that hope has been handed over to her ex-husband’s new wife and joy is for other women whose marriages have made their wedding-day dreams come true, the holidays are a bitter reminder of disappointment and her own sense of failure. Christmas miracles? They don’t happen anymore. Sarah wanted a marriage that would last, and children, but her husband’s unfaithfulness has left her feeling empty, barren and unwanted. So she leaves bright, sunny Phoenix, her home and her job, and returns home with a broken heart that feels as frozen as the stark, snowy landscape of Pennsylvania in the winter time. The last place where she expects to find any reason to hope is in a church; Sarah gave up the traditions in which she was raised when she married her successful and ambitious husband and moved away. But if Sarah has forgotten her faith, her mother, Hope Styles, has not. A faithful churchgoer and a natural born meddler into the lives of her offspring, Hope sets up a job interview for her daughter at the church, which needs a secretary. Sarah doesn’t want the job and doesn’t want the interview, but her mother is indomitable. When Sarah mistakes the pastor for the custodian, she doesn’t expect the interview to be successful. But Ian Cameron, a rugged, good-looking pastor who tends to his congregation with compassion and humor, has a way of delivering Biblical scripture to suit a modern setting. He tells Sarah about Hannah, who prayed for a son; when her prayers were answered, she gave the son to God. To Sarah, both Ian and the Bible lesson are a mystery, but gradually, she discovers that the lessons of faith aren’t always taught from a sermon. As Ian the pastor, Joanne the treasurer, and the members of the church draw her in with their welcome, their stories and their quirks, she starts to feel that hope can resurface, joy can appear and miracles can happen. But do those miracles include falling in love with Ian Cameron, a man of God who knows well that in every believer’s life, including his own, there has been a dark Gethsemane? Can Sarah believe that joy will triumph after the light chases the darkness away? Anthologies & Short Stories Short Stories Marriage Celebration Winter Christmas Witty Heartfelt
