About this listen

First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes...a baby carriage? Isn’t that what all women want? Not so for Claudia Parr. And just as she gives up on finding a man who feels the same way, she meets warm, wonderful Ben. Things seem too good to be true when they fall in love and agree to buck tradition with a satisfying, child-free marriage. Then the unexpected occurs: one of them has a change of heart. One of them wants children after all.

This is the witty, heartfelt story about what happens to the perfect couple when they suddenly want different things. It’s about feeling that your life is set and then realizing that nothing is as you thought it was - and that there is no possible compromise. It’s about deciding what is most important in life, and taking chances to get it. But most of all, it’s about the things we will do - and won’t do - for love.

not as good as other 2 books

Very slow, kinda boring. Didn't love it. Thought it needed more to be more interesting.

Just ok.....

I appreciated the protagonist’s struggle and all the angles presented to try to come to a resolution. The seven-year old’s questions were refreshingly real and I liked hearing how her Aunt responded. The rest of the characters seemed less dimensional, and ultimately I didn’t feel engaged in their stories.

Story pretty good

This was my very first Emily Giffin book and I really enjoyed the story, but I had a hard time getting through the audiobook because of the narrator. I wish I'd known there was another version read by Cynthia Nixon.

The first person POV of this character called for a natural, conversational delivery and this was not it. Instead it felt like I was listening to a horrendously long commercial because of the stilted, overly enunciated delivery. Because of this, I didn't connect with the characters like I probably would have if I had just read the book. No one talks like this in real life and it really detracted from the story.

Narrator not a good fit

Interesting story, although kind of unrealistic?

The first half I didn’t care so much for the narrator. She wasn’t terrible, but there was just something about a lilt in her voice. The second half I liked her much more.

Interesting

I've liked others by this author much better. The over analysis of every single aspect of how this character is feeling about having a baby is exhausting. It's similar to disecting minute details with best friends but this character isn't your friend so you don't care as much....

Mediocre

Would you be willing to try another book from Emily Giffin? Why or why not?

Yes. I have read Something Borrowed, Love the One You're With, and Heart of the Matter. Emily Giffin writes about horrible people, but she makes you like them!

What aspect of Christine Marshall’s performance would you have changed?

I thought the narration was average. I did not listen to Cynthia Nixon read this, but I did listen to her read Heart of the Matter. I do think she could have added more of a "snarky" tone/attitude to the characters.

Any additional comments?

I got exactly what I expected with this book. It was time for an easy listen; so, I went searching for a fluff book.

Interesting opinions...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I probably would not recommend this book to anyone except others that read Emily Giffin's books. It was predictable and slow.

If you’ve listened to books by Emily Giffin before, how does this one compare?

This is not one of her best. But I liked the Darcy/Ethan update.

What does Christine Marshall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like listening to Christine. She was good.

Could you see Baby Proof being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

Predictable
