About this listen

Gwendolyn Goode lives a charmed life.

As owner of an occult shop in downtown Salem, Massachusetts, she's accustomed to all things odd and otherworldly. But when a bloody animal sacrifice is left as a warning outside her place of business, the police seem to think Gwen might be the target of some truly evil-doers. Suddenly, her sunny existence is riddled with danger in the form of crazed pagans, rogue employees, and nefarious henchmen. There's only one man who can protect her until the storm passes...

Graham Graves has no time for witchy nonsense.

Not in his love life and definitely not in his line of work. Despite the ever-present oddities of his hometown, the private investigator and acclaimed police consultant prides himself on staying objective in every case that comes across his desk. That all changes when Gwendolyn—a woman who gets under his skin like no other—finds herself in the crosshairs of dangerous criminals. Graham is determined to make her safe, even if her presence tests his steely resolve. As their mutual dislike sizzles into unexpected attraction… he becomes even more determined to make her something else: His.

Bad Luck Charm is a total standalone romance featuring cameos from a fortune-telling parrot, a modern-day pirate, and a coven of well-meaning octogenarians. With characters that leap out of the book and plenty of spooky twists and turns to keep you guessing. Fans of Johnson's previous Boston Love Story series will adore this blend of heat, humor, and suspense.

Great story that keeps you intrigued to the end. The friendships, the characters, the love story, the danger and mystery all draw you in and keep you guessing and wishing you lived in Salem too and wanting to know more about the characters. Next book in the series is not in audible so I will be reading it on my kindle

Never heard of this author before this book showed up on an Bookbud email. Really enjoyed the book and loved that it had an HEA ending. Now I’m off to listen to the second book in the series.

I enjoyed the story, the setting and the main female character. Found myself eye rolling at the main male character’s behavior. Just gross! Narrator was great though!

Liked the story, disliked the love interest

The story was cute, if a bit predictable. But I was disappointed in the audio quality. The narrator did a fine job, but whoever edited the audio left many half-clipped breaths that I found tremendously distracting.

Charming, and steamy!

I enjoy books where the protagonist(s) carry a torch over a lengthy period of time.

The connection with the history of Salem, Mass was intriguing. My favorite of this author’s books so far.

I couldn't finish after getting to the middle and the male lead showed to lack empathy and be controlling. I had hope that him looking like a jerk was from misunderstandings, but the way he treated the main character, who already comes from a traumatic childhood, was disturbing. Writing was otherwise engaging, but the last scene I listened to made me too uncomfortable to finish.

Good Storyline, Toxic Male Lead

Loved this book and all of the characters! The narrator was also so so good!

Didnt want it to end!

Predictable "twist" that I won't ruin for anyone but overall an enjoyable listen. The narrator was good and I enjoyed the spicy storyline despite the unrealistic multiple Os that no human man could possibly live up to. The Irish mob subplot never got resolved and there were several inconsistencies in the story, making it feel like a rough draft rather than a final edit

Decent Listen

After listening to JJ’s Boston series, I wanted more, and I found this one. Already listened to book 2- I love the characters internal monologue - so relatable. I also love the little stories about the places she bases her books in Makes me want to visit them. My only complaint is the rest of the series is yet to be written/released. Great narration by Isabelle Turner as well- she really brings all the characters to life. Will definitely seek out her other work as well!

Love the characters!
