About this listen

From marriage, infidelity, and the mayhem of motherhood to scandal, tragedy, and illness - three women seek peace and comfort in Nantucket as they cope with life's challenges.

Three women - burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues - tumble onto the Nantucket airport tarmac one hot June day. Vicki is trying to sort through the news that she has a serious illness. Her sister, Brenda, has just left her job after being caught in an affair with a student. And their friend Melanie, after seven failed in vitro attempts, is pregnant at last - but only after learning that her husband is having an affair. They have come to escape, enjoy the sun, and relax in Nantucket's calming air. But into the house, into their world, steps 22-year-old Josh Flynn.

Barefoot weaves these four lives together in a story with enthralling sweep and scope - a novel that is as fun and memorable and bittersweet as that one perfect day of summer.

I'm not a fan of the background music and noise, but the narration was good, the story was good and I did get used to the background sounds eventually.

Great story!

There were a few areas of the book that skipped.

Climax was a bit anti-climatic.

The background music was super annoying, as were the dramatic pauses. The baby voice for Blaine was perfectly awful. I love Elin Hilderbrand's books and have read many. The story was good but....

annoying background music

Likes the.overall plot and characters - some sections seemed rather undeveloped, like a rough draft - for example, the ending is very abrupt.
I also didn’t care for the narration. Some sections had annoying background music that I did not care for- some had “noises” added in, like doorbells, phones ringing, etc - but was inconsistent- none of those in the last chapters!

Not as good as her usual!

I’m revisiting Elin Hilderbrand’s books on audio. The female narrators who read her books are top notch, able to do multiple different voices in both genders and of different ages so dialogue sounds different. The narration elevates my enjoyment of the stories and allows me to overlook things that might bug me reading printed word.

Hilderbrand and I have different ideas of “good relationships” from friendships, to family to romance. Her healthiest relationships are parent/child. I didn’t understand the friendships in NANTUCKET NIGHTS. The friends didn’t seem to like each other much. Antonia was so closed off and gave nothing to the others. Val and Kayla seemed more compatible, but as the saying goes, with friends like Val, who needs enemies. I think we were supposed to like Kayla’s husband, but he was such a misogynist, ordered her around and she just followed.

I’m not sure why I enjoyed this book so much, but I did.

Great beach listen

This was recorded in 2008. There’s background music and sound effects. It does not sync with Kindle. It’s abridged. And it’s not Elin Hilderbrand’s best work. She has a huge body of work; you’ll find better.

Ugh

Too much back and forth not enough development in the characters. Just not that interesting

Never developed my interest in the story

So dragged out and all over the place. Waste of time, even as a summer read. Not her usual.
