About this listen

When a local fisherman is mauled to death, it seems like the only possible cause is a mythical creature in the latest puzzling entry in this USA Today bestselling series.

An ice fisherman is savagely mauled to death in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and an eyewitness claims the man was attacked by a hodag. There's just one problem with that: it's well known that the creature is not real and was created by a local hoaxer. So how could an imaginary creature be chomping on local sportsmen?

The suggestion that a hodag killed someone isn’t well received by the townsfolk because of its beloved ties to the town and the money it generates from tourist dollars. Due to this, people begin to suspect the witness is the real killer, especially when it’s discovered he has a tangled past with the victim.

The witness to the attack happens to be the nephew of Morgan Carter’s bookstore employee, Rita Bosworth, who convinces the professional cryptozoologist to travel to Wisconsin to prove that a hodag not only exists but killed the victim.

Clues may be hard to come by, but one thing's for sure: something killed that man, and that something now has its eyes focused on Morgan.

Good narration, great story

I thought it dragged a bit in places but loved the ideas. Our intrepid heroine can be a bit too convinced of her own survival.

Wow! Super Interesting Storyline!

The third book in this series took a turn that was a little unexpected, but very interesting! Without giving any spoilers away, this is a very apt topic for these modern times and I love how the author provided extra details at the end of the stories. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series already!

another gripping mystery

I enjoyed this clever twist on Morgan's cryptid hunts as well as the character development for Morgan, Rita, John and Devon. And that sweet boy, Newt.

Wonderful narration!

I’ve read every book in the series thus far and have loved the concept of murder mystery interwoven with cryptozoology. This book evolves quite a few running side plots from previous books in the series and the character development has been great!
Susan Bennett is a wonderful narrator and a respite from the monotone vocal fry typically used for female leads within the mystery/thriller genre.

Another winner

Book 3 of the Monster Hunter Mysteries finds Morgan Carter travelling to Rhinelander Wisconsin to help exonerate her friend and employee Rita's nephew from a murder charge. How can a cryptozoologist do to help find him innocent? Why all she needs to do is prove that the locally famous town mascot, and widely known hoax, a Hodag committed the killing. Even she feels like it's a fool's errand, but things get odd as the town seems to close ranks defending the supposedly mythical beast.

A great deal of fun. I anx

4 and a half

Beast of the North Woods is entertaining and well-written. However, Morgan made a lot of questionable decisions. If the writing wasn't solid, I would have given up on her.
