About this listen

Alanna has been plagued by tragedy. So it should come as no surprise that in the beauty that surrounds Charleston, all is not as it seems.

When her husband is killed by a car bomb while their band is on tour in Charleston, Alanna doesn't know where to turn. Her father-in-law is threatening to take custody of the baby she carries, but the one thing she knows for sure is that she can't lose the last piece of Liam she has left.

Their manager offers her a marriage of convenience to gain her US citizenship and allow her to escape her father-in-law's control. It seems like the perfect solution...but her doubts begin almost as soon as she arrives at Barry's family home, a decaying mansion surrounded by swamp.

To make matters worse, Liam's best friend survived the car bomb. She's never really liked Jesse, and now she can't seem to get away from him. When he takes Liam's place in their band, it's almost more than she can bear.

But then things start happening. Things that could easily cost Alanna her life - or the life of her unborn child. Are they merely coincidences? Or is there something much more sinister at work?

It may be my favorite Colleen Coble book. I enjoyed the characters and the plot.

not at all believable

don't want to give the story away too much...but two men are in a horrible accident. one survived, but supposedly w/ amnesia....he is able to do everything but remember his past. The most odd part is that while he believes he is one man he looses the accent he had all his life and adopts that man's accent and suddenly he recalls who he really is and starts using his own accent again. Pretty ridiculous.

Heart stopping thriller!

Would you listen to Because You're Mine again? Why?

Yes...now that I know the outcome I won't have a heart attack....It was a great book.

What did you like best about this story?

The undying love of the main character...also, I love most things Irish.

What about Devon O'Day’s performance did you like?

I love her style. One of my favorite narrators. Loved her Irish accent. Not crazy about some of the men's "voices" ...but, by in large, I love Devon O'Day...have several audible books by her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

My only problem was I kept picturing the characters in mid 1800's rather than present day..since a lot of the story is taking place in an old mansion/plantation type setting my mind kept seeing them in civil war period type clothing, etc...then the narration would talk about the cars (Mercedes) etc...and I would snap back to present day... The drama was so intense at times my chest was hurting...very emotional and scary....almost as scary, at times, as Abomination by the same author, Colleen Coble.

Incredible story

This was my first Colleen Conley book. I bought it for the Irish connection. And loved the characters. The Irish accents were very well done by the narrator as were all the voices. Her range of timbres and pitches as well as the transitions between Irish and American accents were seamless and made listening a joy. I figured out quite a bit of the plot early on but was drawn along in anticipation of how the other characters would learn of the truth. Well done scenes and good suspense. I highly recommend this book.

Wow! On the edge of the page.

If I was reading the book instead of listening to it, my fingers would have been on the edge of the page all the way through. Wow. What a story. I never knew what was happening next or who was doing it. Great characters! Great story and Great Job of telling it too.

Slow start but worth it....

This book started slowly and took a while to grasp my interest. Worth the wait. It becomes a great story!

This book kept me interested and curious. pretty sure I got the idea of the possible outcome fairly early on, however, lots of things kept me reading

An Intriguing Story!

Any additional comments?

I've read a couple of Colleen Coble's books in the past and really enjoyed them. I'll be honest, the description of this didn't really grab me when I first read it, but since I was offered the opportunity to review it, I decided to give it a shot. I really wanted to like it, but I'm afraid I just really didn't. I liked Alanna as a main character and really felt for her, but I also found myself getting very frustrated that such an independent and intelligent woman couldn't seem to see what was really going on. I did guess the major twist very early on (though I had read some spoiler reviews prior to reading this book so I had an idea of what the twist was before I even got started, so obviously I can't know for sure but I feel pretty certain that even had I not read those reviews I would have still realized very early on what the truth was) so it wasn't the mystery of whether or not my guess was correct that kept me reading, but rather interest in seeing how it would all finally play out! There were two things I loved about this book, the first was all the bits of Irish culture and such (By the way, I have also listened to the audio version of this book and I loved the narrator, she did a fabulous job with all the accents, Irish and Southern alike!) and the amazing descriptions of Blackwater hall and its surroundings, I was swept away and felt like I was really there which made the book a bit hard to read at times because things were just so creepy and I felt I was experiencing them alongside Alanna, it was kind of strange but bits and pieces of the setting kept reminding of two different movies "The Haunted Mansion" and "The Rescuers" not that this book was in anyway similar because it wasn't, it was just the ancient mansion/southern swamp/alligators as pets thing that made me think of these other stories as I was reading.
This book is definitely not your typical suspense novel, but it was intriguing. If you are interested in a book that is different from the typical suspense read and don't mind suspending disbelief, I recommend this story. It wasn't really my cup of tea but overall I am glad I read this book and like I said there were some things I really liked about it and I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Colleen Coble's books in the future.

I received this book from the publisher. No review required. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
