Thom S. Rainer
About this listen
Most church members don't see their churches clearly.
In almost all of Thom S. Rainer's consultations, church members perceive their church to be friendly. But as he surveyed guests, he found that the guests typically saw church members as unfriendly. The perception chasm existed because the members were indeed friendly, to one another. The guests felt like they crashed a private party.
Best-selling author of I Am a Church Member and Autopsy of a Deceased Church, Thom Rainer has a game plan for churches to become more hospitable. In a format that is suitable for church members to listen to individually or together, Rainer guides listeners toward a practical framework for making a difference for those who visit their church. Churches may use Becoming a Welcoming Church to assess and audit where they are on a spectrum between welcoming and wanting. Additionally, churches can use the companion audiobook, We Want You Here, to send guests home with a compelling vision for what pastors want every guest to know when they visit.

The key to growth as a church, youth ministry, or a business is getting first-time guests to come back. It's about hospitality. The Come Back Effect reveals to church, ministry, and even business leaders the secret to helping a first-time guest return again and again. Through an engaging, story-driven approach, they explain how service and hospitality are two different things, describe how Jesus practiced hospitality, and invite leaders to develop and implement changes that lead to repeat visits and, eventually, to sustained growth.

He lays out what is required for church leaders to multiply deeply changed people who are growing in relationship with God, themselves, and others. Scazzero begins with four beneath-the-surface, systemic gaps that undermine serious discipleship. He provides a clear vision for a church culture that deeply changes lives and then practically unpacks the seven biblical marks of emotionally healthy discipleship.

Story
The world needs real men, real bad. And there are all sorts of conflicting ideas and messages about what a "real man" is (and is not). Is a real man one who hunts, loves sports, grills meat, fixes cars, and climbs mountains? Sure, sometimes. But that's not really the point of being a man. Brant Hansen paints a refreshingly specific, compelling picture of what men are made to be: "Keepers of the Garden." He calls for men of all interests and backgrounds to be ambitious about the right things and to see themselves as defenders of the vulnerable, with whatever resources they have.

Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions.

Story
Many people today talk about justice, but are they living justly? They want to change the world, but are they being changed themselves? Eugene Cho has a confession: "I like to talk about changing the world but I don't really like to do what it takes." If this is true of the man who founded the One Day's Wages global antipoverty movement, then what must it take to act on one's ideals? Cho does not doubt the sincerity of those who want to change the world.

Story
Speakers often use the words vision, boldness, and influence to describe the characteristics of effective leaders. In The Most Excellent Way to Lead, Perry Noble makes the case that the heart of great leadership lies elsewhere. Perry, despite being voted least likely to succeed in high school, beat the odds against him. Today, he inspires 3,500 people every weekend to live for something greater than themselves. He credits this achievement to the leadership principles he has learned from the Bible.

Very helpful
This book is a requirement for our entire leadership team in our church. What a great call to be more welcoming to this who visit our churches! I highly recommend listening with a notepad and listing those areas where you see a need for improvement in your local assembly. Listen honestly and openly and it will dynamically change the way you interact with guests, in turn revitalizing your existing membership.

Still Relevant - and for all size congregations.
I knew of this little book when it was originally published. Even more relevant for post-pandemic recovery. Purchased one for several members and went through each chapter in leiu of Wednesday evening events. Had impact on all who read or listened. Even those who love the "stand and greet" were convinced to give up their personal preference for the sake of guests. We will review this book again - perhaps even required readng for Church Council members?
We are a small church of about 30 active - this isn't just for large congregations!

This book made me take a hard look at our church. I think we are doing some things well but we have much room for improvement. I like the ease of reading/listening and the practicality of this book. It is one I’m sure I will reread many times as I strive to help make our church a more welcoming place!
