About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Two feuding second-grade teachers (and neighbors) find themselves teaming up in this new rivals-to-lovers romance set in Rome, Kentucky—from the New York Times bestselling author of The Rule Book and Practice Makes Perfect.

“Sarah Adams writes books with heart and soul. They speak to the people finding their way and being unapologetically themselves in the process. I love her style.”—Hannah Grace, author of Icebreaker

Emily Walker hates having her carefully crafted world disrupted by anyone, most of all her legendary nemesis, Jack Bennett. He’s the opposite of the wonderful heroes she dreams up in her double life as a romance writer, which is why Emily was perfectly happy when Jack left Rome, Kentucky, mid-school year with his fiancée. The last thing Emily saw coming was Jack’s return at the start of the summer after calling off the wedding and ending his relationship, but he’s here to stay—as her colleague and her neighbor.

Jack is glad to be back, eager to renovate his house and work on the next mystery novel under his bestselling pen name. But when he realizes he’s now neighbors with the one woman who has always pushed his buttons, he discovers something he’s even more excited about—thwarting Emily and her petty plans to sabotage his return.

With their chemistry-fueled animosity at an all-time high, Emily accidentally sends an email to their school’s principal that could reveal her secret literary side hustle. She needs to steal back her manuscript, and Jack—she hates to admit—is just the man to help her. Surprisingly, he agrees. Will their unlikely alliance put an end to their rivalry? Or could it lead to a steamy plot twist they never saw coming?

Sweet story - not my favorite narration

I have been loving this series - have eaten up the other two (along with this one) and cannot wait for the next one (I havent looked into this but there has to be a Maddie story). But, I feel like the male narrator wasn't the best voice for Jack. He has a great voice for a mystery or historical fiction (that isn't a romance) but his voice for this story wasn't right. I would almost rather have the female voice the male part than have a voice that doesn't fit the character. I really loved this story though!

Not my favorite

Emily acted like a spoiled child through out the entire book. It drove me crazy. And it felt like Jack was trading one dysfunctional adult in his life for another one.

Beg, Borrow, or Steal

Emily Walker hates having her carefully organized life disrupted, but when Jack Bennett her nemesis from college comes back to town at the start of summer no longer engaged or married that’s what happens. Not only is he back in town but they are now neighbors. During an emotional night Emily accidentally sends an email to their school principal she goes to Jack for help to get it back.

I was so excited to get back to the small town of Rome, Kentucky and visiting the Walker siblings with the small town vibes and everyone looking out for each other. I just really loved Emily and Jackson, their banter and chemistry is just swoon worthy. The jabs they told each other were never hurtful just funny. I loved the progression from nemesis to friends to lovers. Seeing the growth that Emily makes is amazing with herself and her family.

Honestly you can not go wrong with a Sarah Adams book and this one did not disappoint.

Another fun entry in the When in Rome series

I am normally not the biggest fan of book series. They are a time commitment, and many book series have one book that is just "meh". You can tell the writer is just trying to fulfill a three or four-book contract, but they are not really inspired by what they are writing. That is not the case with the When in Rome series. Every book in the series has been a ton of fun.

I picked up book one of this series simply because I thought the cover was cute, and, more importantly, it is set in Kentucky, where my best friend lives. Who knew that the When in Rome books would become my favorite romance series.

In Beg, Borrow, or Steal, we have a rivals-to-lovers dynamic between two teachers/secret authors. I love our FMC Emily. She is the embodiment of the older sibling. She is an overprotective, silently suffering, type A personality because she had to help raise her siblings at a young age. Emily keeps her fears and her loneliness to herself. Her solitude is upended in the best way when a rival teacher, Jackson Bennett, moves in next door. They will drive each other crazy, much to the reader's amusement and bond in ways they never expected.

I really liked this third entry in the When in Rome series. I hoped that it would be my favorite, but it was a bit slow at times. Practice Makes Perfect, Annie's story, book two in the series, is still my favorite. Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed this entry, and I rooted for Emily and Jack, not just as a couple, but as individuals, too. I loved them both, and I always look forward to returning to Sarah Adams' Rome, Kentucky and all of that town's lovable characters. I need Maddie's story now. She is absolutely my favorite Walker sister.

Great Story

I love this story. I love that in the prequel tha author tells you which chapters contain the steamy scenes. This is about two wonderfully described characters who build a relationship. It is NOT “I met you a week ago, fell in love for life and am now banging the heck out of you”. I appreciate the storyline so much. I laughed at some of the scenes and did not want to put it down. Thanks, Sarah Adams!

I like strong women characters

I love romance stories that address more than the romance. The mental health themes were not the primary focus but enhanced the character development and story line. I also love books about teachers and teaching, even though there wasn’t much about that.
