Publisher's summary

The must-have companion to Bill O'Reilly's historic series Legends and Lies: The Real West, a fascinating, eye-opening look at the truth behind the western legends we all think we know.

How did Davy Crockett save President Jackson's life only to end up dying at the Alamo? Was the Lone Ranger based on a real lawman-and was he an African American? What amazing detective work led to the capture of Black Bart, the "gentleman bandit" and one of the west's most famous stagecoach robbers? Did Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid really die in a hail of bullets in South America? Generations of Americans have grown up on TV shows, movies and books about these western icons. But what really happened in the Wild West? All the stories you think you know, and others that will astonish you, are here--some heroic, some brutal and bloody, all riveting. Included are the ten legends featured in Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies docuseries -from Kit Carson to Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok to Doc Holliday-- accompanied by two bonus chapters on Daniel Boone and Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley.

Frontier America was a place where instinct mattered more than education, and courage was necessary for survival. It was a place where luck made a difference and legends were made. Heavily illustrated with spectacular artwork that further brings this history to life, and told in fast-paced, immersive narrative, Legends and Lies is an irresistible, adventure-packed ride back into one of the most storied era of our nation's rich history.

The Real Story of Cowboys and Indians

This was not only an interesting novel but provided a history lesson as well about interesting people that help shape and settle the west. It’s well written and narrated.

No Sam Bass?

This book was interesting, as I thought it would be. Some insightful stories about real life "heroes" of the old west. I was a bit put off because he did not include Sam Bass. He and his gang pulled off one of the largest Union Pacific robberies ever, in fact maybe the largest. Over $60,000 on September 18, 1887, near Big Springs Nebraska. He found his way back to Texas and I guess that's why he interests me so much because where I grew up was one of his hideouts. Oh well, guess he couldn't include all the outlaws. Still a good listen. Not as good as the first one but definitely better than the one on the Civil War, I stopped listening about 3 minutes into that one!!

Excellent book. Interesting facts.

I would definitely recommend if you're into the history of the old west. Black Bart and Annie Oakley were my favorites!

Bill O'Reilly obnoxious self serving GREAT author

Would you listen to Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies again? Why?

No, but it was great book.

What other book might you compare Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies to and why?

It is a unique book, unlike any other book I have read. I have not read or listened to any of O'Reilly's other books, so I can't compare them.

What about Tom Wopat’s performance did you like?

Luke Duke is pretty damn good narrator!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book that intertwines history and entertainment. I despise Bill O'Reilly, but damnit this is a good book.

Good Summary of Wild West

Generally a very good summary of the Wild West characters. I would have enjoyed Bill O’Reilly to narrate but the narrator did a very good job.

Interesting at first but repetitive

Good book but after several chapters all of the characters blend into one. Could have been shorter. I liked the performance.
