About this listen

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Great mystery read!

I had never before read any of Gregg Hurwitz's books, but I actually saw this book advertised elsewhere and decided to buy and download it. I couldn't stop listening to it and hated it when the book ended. I haven't felt like that about a book in a long time! I personally was very impressed with the writing and am looking forward to reading more of his work. Hope I'm as happy with the others as with this one. Try it if you like a good mystery! Would love to have these characters return in a follow-up, perhaps.

Hold On!

If you could sum up You're Next in three words, what would they be?

Hurwitz does it again. Pulls you in, holds on and twists and turns to the very end. SB does his usual masterful job here, but the real hero is the plot and story telling. If you like being manipulated by the writer, this is the one for you!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Shep. I have a person close to me who has the same issues, and SB does a great job capturing this. You will figure it out.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

As above.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Hold On.

Do you really know your roots?

Scott Brick might have done his best read I have ever heard him do!
The story starts with a father delivering his 4 year old son into the questionable world of foster care. The the father says he will be back, but that never happens. The father tells the boy-Mike that he is sorry and that it's not his fault.
While Mike is in the system he makes one life long friend Shep- the only problem is Shep understands friendship and Mike doesn't
Mike has worked his way up through the ranks and has become a recognized contractor , and has received an award from the governor.
Later in the parking lot two men make a veiled threat against Mike and his family. Mike doesn't know what to do about this situation, so he decides to call Shep, and he knows his wife doesn't really like the fact that Shep will be involved in their lives. From this point the story goes full bore into violence, conspiracy, murder, deception, and brute force.
Before I give away too much I'll stop
But this book is worth the credit in my way of thinking, hope you agree.

Good book. It would make a great action thriller movie with some great twists and turns. Scott Brick was excellent as usual.
