Former Army MP Mercy Carr and her retired bomb-sniffing dog, Elvis, are back in Blind Search, the sequel to the critically acclaimed A Borrowing of Bones.
It’s October, hunting season in the Green Mountains - and the Vermont wilderness has never been more beautiful or more dangerous. Especially for nine-year-old Henry, who’s lost in the woods. Again. Only this time, he sees something terrible. When a young woman is found shot through the heart with a fatal arrow, Mercy thinks that something is murder. But Henry, a math genius whose autism often silences him when he should speak up most, is not talking.
Now, there’s a murderer hiding among the hunters in the forest - and Mercy and Elvis must team up with their crime-solving friends, game warden Troy Warner and search-and-rescue dog Susie Bear, to find the killer - before the killer finds Henry. When an early season blizzard hits the mountains, cutting them off from the rest of the world, the race is on to solve the crime, apprehend the murderer, and keep the boy safe until the snowplows get through.
Inspired by the true search-and-rescue case of an autistic boy who got lost in the Vermont wilderness, Paula Munier's mystery is a compelling roller coaster ride through the worst of winter - and human nature.

Henry doesn't consider himself lost in the Green Mountains. It's just that the adults in his life don't know where he is at the moment. He's not concerned. But during his sojourn in the woods, a devastating event takes place, and the autistic Henry can't seem to share the information he needs to. Henry does speak, but his mind works best in mathematical equations, not so much with words alone. However, he's also good with games, especially RPGs.
Paula Munier has compiled a richly developed cast of characters for this, the second book in the Mercy Carr or (Mercy and Elvis) series. This tale highlights a stark difference between the down-to-earth Vermonters who love the nature around them in various ways and those they call "Peepers" who infiltrate the state to take advantage of the sights of Autumn. There is also a severe contrast with the rich clientele brought in to enjoy the opening of hunting season. Their views of the world in general differ greatly from those of most of the locals. But there's much more at stake here than a battle between the "haves" and the "have-nots." This mystery has its roots in the past, in the secrets friends have held over the years and the lies they've told.
While this is the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. As a big fan of literary series, I prefer to start at the beginning but somehow missed book one in this series. I can tell you I thoroughly enjoyed this story and found the characters and storyline easy to follow anyway. However, having now met Mercy and Elvis, Troy and Susie Bear, I will be backtracking to book one before I continue with the series. I want the full story from the beginning and look forward to more from this author and this cast of characters.
