The paranormal investigation team of Lacey Fitzpatrick and medium Sam Firecloud is keeping tabs on a serial killer case that’s baffling the LAPD: Four murders in a month, with no solid leads or suspects. When Sam and Lacey offer their assistance, the PD reluctantly agrees, but Sam gets more than he bargains for when he visits the crime scenes. In addition to picking up impressions from the victims, he’s also receiving feelings from the killer himself. Sam’s unusual connection to the murderer’s mind may help them catch the criminal, but it could also lead the murderer to them. In a deadly race against time, Sam and Lacey piece the clues together to catch the killer before he catches them.

This is the eighth book in the Fitzpatrick and Firecloud mystery series. While it has some ongoing storylines related to the MC's relationship and family life - I would still call this a standalone book. However, having written that, I would highly recommend that you start with the first book in the series - you won't regret it. This series is very engaging with great characters, historical/cultural insights, and good mysteries.
I absolutely loved the twist in this book - I don't want to give it away - and I hope the author pursues more exploration into Sam's abilities as the series continues. I wish it had been explored a bit more here but what we got was a pretty gruesome glimpse. And now that this additional ability has been uncovered, I am interested to see if Sam is able to use it again [here's wishing it wasn't just a one-off]. I hope after this experience, Sam visits his grandfather [one of my favorite characters] for a well-needed therapy session at the reservation. This was a tense and thrilling story which I very much enjoyed. And I liked that, as a reader, you're able to catch your breath for some of the more light-hearted and heartwarming moments of Sam and Lacey's relationship. Recommend.
As always, the narrator of this series, Laura Wilson, did a wonderful job.

Hopping into this series at random is like catching a random episode of NCIS, the interpersonal aspects of Sam Firecloud and Lacey might be muddled but the mystery itself is totally compelling. While I really hate reading about serial killers and especially about getting inside their heads, at least in Ms Bowersock's fiction I know that they will be stopped and the journey is well worth taking. Which is to explain why I can't say that I love it but value the writing.
Laura Wilson is a very good narrator with lousy soundproofing in her booth.
Compelling
