About this listen
Joan Robinson Hill was a world-class equestrian, a glamorous member of Houston high society, and the wife of Dr. John Hill, a handsome and successful plastic surgeon. Her father, Ash Robinson, was a charismatic oil tycoon obsessed with making his daughter's every dream come true.
Rich, attractive, and reckless, Joan was one of the most celebrated women in a town infatuated with money, power, and fame. Then one morning in 1969, she fell mysteriously ill. The sordid events that followed comprise "what may be the most compelling and complex case in crime annals" (Ann Rule, best-selling author of The Stranger Beside Me).
From the elegant mansions of River Oaks, one of America's most exclusive neighborhoods, to a seedy underworld of prostitution and murder-for-hire, New York Times best-selling author Thomas Thompson tracks down every bizarre motive and enigmatic clue to weave a fascinating tale of lust and vengeance. Full of colorful characters, shocking twists, and deadly secrets, Blood and Money is "an absolute spellbinder" and true crime masterpiece (Newsweek).

Story
In Creekstone, Texas, a small, quiet suburb of Houston, football was king and David Temple was a prince. A former high school and college gridiron-star-turned-coach, he had a fairy-tale marriage to bright, vivacious Belinda Lucas, a teacher at the local high school who was so warm and popular her colleagues called her "The Sunshine Girl". The fairy tale ended savagely on January 11, 1999, when Belinda's lifeless body was discovered in a closet. Her skull had been shattered by a shotgun blast at close range. She was eight months pregnant.

Story
There was no pattern to the murders, no common thread other than the fact that the victims were all vacationers, robbed of their possessions, and slain in seemingly random crimes. Authorities across three continents and a dozen nations had no idea they were all looking for the same man: Charles Sobhraj, aka "The Serpent". A handsome Frenchman of Vietnamese and Indian origin, Sobhraj targeted backpackers on the "hippie trail" between Europe and South Asia. A master of deception, he used his powerful intellect and considerable sex appeal to lure naive travelers into a life of crime.

Story
The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

Story
The police in Jersey County, Illinois, accepted Paula Sims' story of a masked kidnapper who snatched her baby girl, Lorelei, from her bassinet. Three years later, her second newborn daughter suffered an identical fate - and this time the police were unable to stop searching until they had discovered the whole horrifying truth. This is the full terrifying story of twisted sexuality and hate seething below the surface of a seemingly normal family and of the massive investigation and nerve-shattering trial that made the unthinkable a reality.

Story
It was a bleak November in 2012 when Cari Lea Farver vanished from Omaha, Nebraska. Cari, 37, was a devoted mother, reliable employee, and loyal friend - not the type to shirk responsibilities, abandon her son, and run off on an adventure while her dying father took his last breaths. Yet, the many texts from her phone indicated she had done just that. While Cari's boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, and her supervisor were bewildered by her abrupt disappearance, they accepted the texts at face value. Her mother, Nancy Raney, however, was alarmed and reported Cari missing.

Story
On March 16, 1992, Elizabeth DeCaro, a 28 year-old mother of four, was found dead in her own home, murdered execution-style with two bullets to the head. Her husband, Rick, was immediately a suspect, having previously struck her "accidentally" with the family van after taking out a $100,000 life insurance policy on her. A Killer Among Us presents the true shocking story of Elizabeth's family and their search for justice against the man who continued to play father to the children whose mother he had killed.

Story
Fusing the narrative power of an award-winning novelist and the detailed research of an experienced investigator, author Darcy O'Brien unfolds the story of Dr. John Dale Cavaness, the southern Illinois physician and surgeon charged with the murder of his son Sean in December 1984. Outraged by the arrest of the skilled medical practitioner who selflessly attended to their needs, the people of Little Egypt, as the natives call their region, rose to his defense. But during the subsequent trial, a radically different, disquieting portrait of Dr. Cavaness would emerge.

Story
A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the soaring West Seattle Bridge, causing millions in damages; and following his inexplicable disappearance at age 80. Was he a suicide, a man broken by one costly misstep? Had he run off with a lifelong love? Or did a trail of gruesome evidence lead to the home Rolf shared with his wife, Ruth?

On an August night in 1986, Jennifer Levin left a Manhattan bar with Robert Chambers. The next morning, her strangled, battered body was found in Central Park. Linda Wolfe goes beyond the headlines and media hype to recreate a story of a teenager whose immigrant mother was determined to make a better life for her son, a petty thief and drug user who'd been expelled from the best schools. Wasted powerfully depicts the freewheeling 1980s society that spawned a generation steeped in violence and the fatal impulses that drove Robert Chambers to kill.

The wayward son of a revered Civil War general, Roland Molineux enjoyed good looks, status, and fortune - hardly the qualities of a prime suspect in a series of shocking, merciless cyanide killings. Molineux's subsequent indictment for murder led to two explosive trials and a sex-infused scandal that shocked the nation. Bringing to life Manhattan's Gilded Age, Schechter captures all the colors of the tumultuous legal proceedings.

It also chronicles a justice system gone wrong. Throughout his criminal career, Hatcher was able to fool dozens of psychiatrists, who repeatedly failed to identify him as a multiple murderer. Hatcher's astonishing skill was not just in his ability to murder and escape imprisonment. He became an expert at manipulating the criminal justice system.

Twists and turns!
Love this book and the story it tells. The characters are fascinating and the story is almost unbelievable….yet 100% true. It probably doesn’t hurt that I am a native of Houston and am related to one of the people in the story…..even though I never met her. I’m also a police officer and struggle to imagine a world where so many things could go wrong within the various investigations without someone being thrown under a bus.

Way too long.
This book could have easily been reduced by 20-50%. This is in addition to me listening to the book at 2x speed. Interesting story but lost of repetition and unnecessary detail.

Don"t mess with Fathers
First all the narration was great clear easy to listen to .Now the story was detailed and most entertaining. You get the full bio on all true characters involve with this story . From the larger than like father Ash to his beautiful and Tragic daughter Joan and the evil plastic surgeon doctor she married. I love listening to the many intertwine lives and how each one had a role to play in this haunting story. My favorite part was the descriptions of early Houston Texas and how oil made these men rich and powerful, but this father love for his Pose and grand daughter. How her horrifying murder would bring him in contact with the underbelly of life and the people that reside there. If you love Stories of Rich and the powerful and riveting courtroom drama then this is the book and listen for you .

Enjoyed for the most part
Enjoyed that it went into each characters life but didn’t care for the narrator. He did get better or maybe I just got accustomed to him.

Very unsatisfactory ending
You would think after 21 hours, there would be some closure or clarification to what happened to the true mastermind behind the final killing. This book never explains why he was never charged in this case. You can assume money and power but this is never really explored. The narrator was so bland and matter of fact that it sounded more like a news report than a passionate true crime murder. I wouldn't wast a credit or your time.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS BOOK FOR A LONG TIME. I READ THE PHYSICAL BOOK YEARS AGO. NOW THAT I CAN'T SEE WELL ENOUGH FOR SERIOUS READING I CAN LISTEN TO IT AGAIN!
I DID NOT CARE FOR THE NARRATOR BUT HE WAS OK. HE SEEMED TO LACK SOMETHING.
I DO THINK THAT THE BOOK SHOULD HAVE PORTRAYED DR. HILL TO SHOW HIS TRUE NASTINESS. BUT I SUPPOSE THE BOOK WAS BEING OBJECTIVE. ANYWAY IT WAS A GOOD STORY!

Weird story. Not what I expected but good.
This case changes, Big Time half way thru, I didn’t see it coming, and quite frankly I think the husband is guilty. There are so many more ways to poison that heavy metals. I think the evidence of Petri dish and his behavior made him 100% guilty. But the book takes a chilling turn. I mean it is a true story I believe. I had a hard time caring about the second part, bc I didn’t care about the person who was killed, and the person who causes the crime was insane with grief.
