After recording the last interview of a month-long media extravaganza orchestrated by the brass, NYPD Detectives Chiara Corelli and P. J. Parker are hoping for time out of the spotlight working cold cases and/or solving low profile murders. But the brutal murder of Alessandra Moreau, a singer on track to becoming a superstar, in the living room of New York State Senator Leigh Drayman, a trans woman, is anything but.
Besides Drayman, only Moreau's twin sister and her wife knew she was a trans woman, so Corelli and Parker focus their attention on three suspects—the agent/manager stealing from her, a man from her attorney's office who assaulted her, and H, a rejected lover who she fears.
And when they find thirteen trans women murdered in exactly the manner as Moreau in just over two years, their focus changes and they enlist the senator's help to get the NYPD to set up a task force.
With the murder of two more trans women in New York City, the killer seems to be taunting them. But they are no closer to finding him then they were after Moreau was murdered.
As they dig deeper into those early murders, they eliminate suspects and begin to focus on the one with motive, means, and opportunity.

These books are some of my favorites. They are gritty , real, deeply personal. The author has an amazing eye for intricacy. In the systems , dysfunction, family and fragility that dominate much of our worldm. These characters are real, complex and flawed.
This series ages like fine wine and doesn't shy away from the terrible violence hate and oppression perpetuated by those whose choices are driven by fear not hope. (Mandela)
Thank you for shining light on the struggle so many trans people face just to exist and breathe in their own skin. It's needed now more than ever.
A superb commentary on troubling times.

Gruesome murders, lesbians, transgenders, and a lot of bigotry and hate are within his story.
While there are lesbian relationships in progress, there is no romance. I was sorry that P.J and Benson never got together, I'm glad P.J found her Dr. Rowan. Chiara was having a hard time with Brett overseas, as her nightmares were back and her anger started spurring again. But she was doing better in keeping it under control with P.J"s help.

Detective Chiara Corelli, and her partner, bodyguard P.J. Parker are assigned a new case, when a trans woman is found bludgeoned, and mutilated in the home of a trans senator. This begins this mystery.
You don’t need to read the first 4 in the series to enjoy this book, but it would help regarding the references of the detectives past experiences.
The writing is like opening a new puzzle. You know all of these pieces fit together, but it’s going to take time, and some forethought before the full picture is revealed.
Catherine Maorisi’s writing is a day by day account of Corelli, and Parker’s detective work in solving the case.
I really like that the author has a fantastic story that isn’t built around sex. Don’t get me wrong, a sexy story can be terrific, but this series centers around the detectives and their work. Of course their relationships play a part, but it’s not a focus.
This is a detective story, where the detectives are lesbians. It’s not lesbian’s who just happen to be detectives.
If you like your listen to be a meaty, well fleshed out story, this series could be your next new discovery.
Abby Crayden has given these characters a voice, which perfectly molds their personalities. I can’t hear PJ or Corelli in any different way. They are forever in my mind as Abby Crayden’s voice has cemented them.
I hope there will be another book, though I shouldn’t be greedy as this one has just landed……but……I’ll wait for it.
I’ve Been Waiting For This!
