Just back from her second tour in Afghanistan, NYPD Detective Chiara Corelli goes undercover to expose a ring of dirty cops. But when she's ordered to kill to prove her loyalty, she aborts the operation without having identified the leaders. Now, Corelli is the one exposed. With her brothers and sisters in blue ostracizing her, can she trust Detective P. J. Parker to watch her back?
Parker is the daughter of a vehement critic of the NYPD. But that doesn't stop her from wanting to work in the homicide division. And wanting to learn from the best. Unfortunately, Chiara Corelli is the best....even if she is the most hated detective in the department.
Without Parker, Corelli will be condemned to desk duty. Corelli is Parker's only chance to work in homicide. Will the two women put aside their fears and join forces to solve a brutal murder and identify the leaders of the dirty cops before they get to Corelli's family?

I’m glad these characters will move into another book though.
Also wasn’t sure what to expect when I read in reviews there’s no “traditional”romance between MCs meaning no sex. Sorry if that’s what you’re after. I will tell you, I love my romance/sexy novels ! But admittedly this was extremely well written and of course performed by Abby Craden where I didn’t notice there was no sexy parts.
I’m in and a now a fan. Love the lead detectives being smart, ambitious, gutsy lesbians who are respected for doing their jobs well. Two thumbs up
A really good “who dunit”

Great mystery series

Maiorisi has crafted an airtight mystery. Chiara Corelli, like all great detectives, comes with baggage, and is a highly compelling character. I'll definitely be reading or listening to the next one in the series.

This is a very good old school murder mystery set in New York City with a great audiobook narration by Abby Craden.
The story is about an emotionally damaged homicide detective (Chiara Corelli) who is not likable at first, but the more we learn about her the more sympathetic she becomes.
Corelli is assigned the investigation of the murder of a wealthy Wall Street executive who everyone hates so there is an abundance of possible murder suspects. While she researches the case there is also a second plot line which includes corrupt cops operating in the background. So the story digs into the background and history of Corelli, the investigation of the murder, and the actions of the dirty cops. Plus, the New York City neighborhoods are so well described that they become an additional character in the story.
I totally recommend “A Matter of Blood” by Catherine Maiorisi if you want to read an effectively plotted murder mystery with well developed characters, hidden secrets, suspense, and action.
I just downloaded the second book in the series and am looking forward to listening to it!
Well written police procedural with a sapphic lead
