About this listen

Lightning flashes. Another child disappears....

When Zorka Circus performs, its big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, children vanish from the European towns it leaves behind.

Circus security chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the international performers, but they close ranks - they've always viewed lightning-scarred Rurik as the monster. Nevertheless, he's determined to find the culprit and stop them before anyone else dies and the only place he can call home is ripped apart by the murders.

Into Zorka Circus comes the Skomori clan, despised as gravediggers and ghoulish bloodwalkers. A one-day truce allows bloodwalker Sylvie to marry. Instead, she finds a body. Alerting others will defy her clan's strict rules, break the truce, and leave her an outcast.

When more bodies turn up, the killer's trail becomes impossible to ignore. Rurik and Sylvie must follow the clues - even if they lead to something unimaginable.

I freakin loved this horror story!💜

There are so many things I enjoyed about this story. An unlikely hero for one thing. He’s an outcast & damaged but regardless of his outward scars he’s loyal to his family of circus performers, at least most of them. I also thought it was well written with plenty of creepiness, gore & suspense.
IMO it was unpredictable. There were many plot twists that I didn’t see coming. This story was so intriguing I couldn’t stop listening. Jonathan Waters, once again performs these characters brilliantly. His female voice is one of the best IMO.
This book actually does have an HEA for which I was grateful for.
I highly recommend this book!

Quite Different

This was not the same kind of paranormal reads I normally go for but I found it quite intriguing. The introduction is the most important part but you really need to pay attention to all of it because everything seems to have played a part in the little details. I usually consider myself pretty good with attention to detail but the closer I got to the end and thought back on some of what they were recollecting, I realized I may have missed a few important details. At least realizing after the fact that they were important. I may go back and listen to this one again in order to put it all together. I really loved the main character, including all of his flaws. I loved the fact he wouldn't give up until he found out who was doing it regardless of who it was, even though they all considered each other family in the circus. He knew it was wrong and wanted to save the children from getting hurt. Then there was the wedding, out of the blue, but that was important information about the history of their kind. And the woman who married them, all key things to pay attention to.

The narrator did an excellent job with all the different characters, and there were a lot.

Definitely going to have to listen to this one again. However, well worth it.

Frightening but engaging

I just admit that I was hooked from page one and could not stop listening. I loved all the different mysterious characters and the plot. Bloodwalker is creative, scary, intriguing and heartwarming all at the same time. If you love horror I recommend this book. I received this book at my request. I am leaving my honest opinion here of my own volition.

Story is perfect. Narrator could be better

Each time the Zorca circus passes through a town on the last night a child disappears. While his lightening scars scare many off Rurik is determined to find out what is happening to these children and keep more from meeting the same end. During a one day truce bloodwalker Sylvie and two other young bloodwalkers come to the circus to be married by Zora, the ringmaster's bloodwalker wife. They are met with scorn, but when Sylvie finds a body their options are limited. She can't tell anyone. It was forbidden. But, as more clues mount with the deaths Rurik and Sylvie may be the only chance at stopping this plight.
I received a copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review. I will start with the good. The book is amazing. I don't have a single complaint about the storyline nor the characters. While I could see where the story was heading there was always just enough wiggle room where there was doubt cast upon my main suspect. The author did a great job of attempting to cast around blame.

That being said the audiobook left things to be desired. For the most part it was okay and I am not sure if the narrator is new or simply didn't have editing equipment or what the case was. However, there are multiple points in the book where the narrator mispronounces words, seemingly skips sections of storyline, repeats others, and even clears his throat during the recording. If there was a different narrator or if the narration was fixed it would greatly improve the audio experience.

That being said that is not the author's fault and I will not be holding that against them. Rurik and Sylvie are constantly filled with self-doubt and a low opinion of themselves while trying their best to make the world around them better. Because of this I love them both, but Rurik was easily my favorite character in the book. I also adored the snippets from the bloodwalkers guide at the beginning of each chapter. Getting a further insight into what it should mean to be a bloodwalker was helpful since their work wasn't the focal point of this story.

I fully enjoyed the plot of this book and look forward to more from this author in the future.

Bloodwalkers and Carnies

Everything about this book was right up my ally, only problem was, I never really got engaged. I had a really hard time connecting with any of the characters and about half way through really just didn't care what was happening. I think part of the issue is that it felt like a really slow start that just couldn't hook me. I made it all the way to the end hoping for something that would change my mind , although that never happened. The world that L.X. Cain created was perfect and really should have resonated with me. I hope that I am in the minority here because this story seemed like it should have been a 5 star review from me. Jonatan Waters did a great job with the narration. I loved his accents and character voices, yet it just wasn't enough to get me excited about the story. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
