About this listen

To get a fresh start away from a bad relationship, Kylie Strange moves across the country to open a shop in a seemingly quiet town in rural Maine. During renovations on Strange Herbs & Teas, she discovers a peculiar and ancient codex, The Booke of the Hidden, bricked into the wall. Every small town has its legends and unusual histories, and this artifact sends Kylie right into the center of Moody Bog's biggest secret.

While puzzling over the tome's oddly blank pages, Kylie gets an unexpected visitor - Erasmus Dark, an inscrutable stranger who claims to be a demon, knows she has the book, and warns her that she has opened a portal to the netherworld. Kylie brushes off this nonsense, until a series of bizarre murders put her, the newcomer, at the center. With the help of the demon and a coven of witches she befriends while dodging the handsome but sharp-eyed sheriff, Kylie hunts for a killer - that might not be human.

Contains mature themes.

The book was great the audible was terrible.

The audible does not go to the end of the book, it stops half way in chapter 22 and no epilogue.

Utterly fascinating

This is quite a change from the Crispin Guest series, but it is still interesting. The supernatural is always fascinating to us mortals. I don't read this genre often so I have little to compare it to. I guess I'll have to read some more. 🤭

Bubblegum fantasy … a mindless good time

“Take that, Jeff!”
This series needs a pastel, cartoony cover art to go with the Scooby Gang vibe. Kylie Strange is the usual plucky single girl who bumbles into danger and escapes, not by her wits, but by the convenient appearance of a magical book, crossbow, amulet, or demon. Along the way, she is assisted by her
new Wiccan friends, who are also varying shades of earnest and inept. Any death and violence happens off screen and to red shirt characters. And, there are no answers. This book is one long series of quirky scenes and cryptic talks amounting to “the book portends bad things and Kylie’s got to fix them.”

“A graduate from the demon school of dickheadery”
While the mystery is a slow tease, the romance is laughably fast and shallow. Kylie drools over demon Erasmus and the sheriff every time she’s in their presence and goes all the way without so much as a first date. There is one super tame sex scene, so this can’t technically be called a cozy.
I still put it into the bubblegum category of shallow fantasy, which isn’t a bad thing.
Sometimes I just want something light and fun.

INTERESTNG STORYLINE.

Excellent, well written and performed by Suzanne Elise Freeman, witches, demons and supernaturals. Lots of action and intrigues. Strong female protagonist. A bit of romance with two male interests. The storyline is good and it flows smoothly throughout . Worth a credit.

Creepy

I hated it. Too surrealistic other than the comparison of old boyfriends. I didn't love it.

it was a fun listen

I want to like this more than I did. the narrator is fantastic and the story was good but the main character makes choices that are just stupid, not just mistakes but really dumb choices. over and over again. I liked it enough to finish it and give the next one a chance.
