About this listen

Lieutenant Joe Gunther is in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom investigating a minor embezzling case. It's a pleasant distraction and a chance to reconnect with old friends, but when a house fire reveals itself to be arson, compounded by murder, Gunther can't help but investigate. He quickly finds himself enmeshed in a web of animosity between put-upon townspeople, the state police, angry parents, and members of a reclusive sect. Murder follows murder, yet no one seems to be telling Gunther the whole truth - not even his childhood friends. And truth is what he desperately needs if he's to stop the killings.

A whodunit that kept you guessing until the end. Characters were well-developed and story was tight

I’m hooked on the series - love the main character Joe Gunther. Like the way he thinks. The story was complex but I still enjoyed it and will go on to the next in the series.

Good mystery.

I was going through my Gunther stories collection and realized that I couldn’t recall this story at all.
I drive a lot due to my job so most of the stories are like background noise and this was one of those stories that I put on just for that purpose.
So I decided to listen to it again and I’m glad that I did.
I missed so much while listening the first time and I’m ticked off at myself because I really enjoyed this story a lot.
The twist and turns were great. It started slow but I actually like this because I can follow along like I’m right there watching the pieces fit together like a puzzle.
The story kept my attention this time. Especially with that twist at the end because I didn’t see that coming.

Glad that I listened to this one a second time.

Again, audible has made it possible to read new authors and I’m grateful to have found an awesome series. Both the authors’ story and the narrator takes one out of their reality into a story of mystery.
Thank you.

Exceptional

Traveling northward to his hometown at the request of a local official to assist in a potential embezzlement crime, Joe finds himself embroiled in a much bigger case. The town has been practically taken over by a cult group that has moved into the area. The locals are torn between those that find them harmless and those that are outraged of the changes in their community. When Joe assists with the local fire department putting out a fire at the home of one of the cult groups, he finds himself in the middle, once again. Doing his best to quail the locals, assist law enforcement, and unravel multiple murders puts him at the center of attention, wanted or not.

The story moves along at a good pace with just enough police procedure mixed in with the character development to make a solid listen. There are some mild twists and turns moving to a satisfactory conclusion of Archer Mayor's second outing for Joe Gunther. All in all, I would rate it just as satisfying as the first novel.

Again, Tom Taylorson's narration is right on with his throaty delivery as Joe Gunther easily separating him from the balance of the characters. This is definitely worth the listen especially if you are a member that has the Plus Catalog advantage of free downloads. I have number three in my library loaded up for the next edition. Enjoy.

I’m liking more and more of this author. I really like his style and the narrator’s voice is husky. I like that not having to strain my ears for the words. Keep that sh!t up !!!!

Great series

Took a lil time to pick up speed, but the payoff was well worth it.
