About this listen

A mysterious shipwreck could unlock ancient powers… or send her to a watery grave.

Targa MacAuley feels more at home on dry land than in the watery realm of her mermaid ancestors. After 17 years on solid ground, she fears she’ll never grow into the creature her mother hoped she’d become. To keep her mom’s homesickness and true identity under wraps, Targa signs on for a mysterious salvage dive in the Baltic Sea.

Her plan to blend in with the rest of the crew is spoiled when she catches the eye of a handsome local. A freak accident and a strange connection to the ancient shipwreck below attract even more unwanted attention. With both her mom’s secret—and her life—in danger, Targa must finally find the courage to unleash the currents surging deep within.

Born of Water is the first book in The Elemental Origins Series, and won the Gold Medal in the Readers’ Favorite Awards in Young Adult Fantasy. If you like new twists on mermaid lore, simmering romance, and close-knit mother-daughter bonds, then you’ll love A.L. Knorr’s nautical adventure. Embark on a deeper dive into the story's lore with The Wreck of Sybellen, a companion novel included with the book.

Amazing!

This book was wonderful and a delight from start to finish. My teenage son and my 10 year old daughter both zoomed through it with complete enjoyment too. Thank you A L Knorr and Gabra Zackman!

All the Feels

Where do I start?! The start of the book to the finish, I was intrigued. I think the moment I was hooked was after she had coffee with her friends and I was laughing so hard, because it was me and my friend group! I fell even more in love as the story progressed and the strong mother-daughter relationship was clear; as I too, have a strong bond with my own mother. I felt all the feels, and I can't wait to read more of this series. A.L. Knorr is a talented author, and is creative in storyweaving. What I experienced was a masterpiece and beautifully crafted.

Mind blowing mermaid tale

After this story no one will succeed in telling me mermaid do not exist! I adored the description and the interaction between mother and daughter and the love that bloomed between Targa and Anthony. The big finale had me in goosebumps and the way the narrator did her job was nothing short of magical. I read the book before but hearing it was beautiful.

Loved the story, hated the narration

Loved the plot and the writing. The reading however seemed to be AI and it was very distracting to me. I plan on getting the paper copies of the rest of the series.

great new take on elementals

the narrator has a pleasant voice that grows on you. I was a bit bothered by the slight accent at first but the story soon made me forget everything else!!
I've been meaning to read the series for a while but love this opportunity instead. it catches you early on drawing you into where they are. perhaps it depends on that I have been where it plays out, that I can actually see the environment so clear.
it felt a little easy for Targa to learn how to handle her powers. I wish the next book was her story like I thought, that was disappointing and the thing that not gives all 5stars...

The World is hauntingly beautiful

I loved the narrator who introduced this gem of a story. The author, Knorr, is so vivid and detailed with her storytelling that I was drawn into the scenes and disappeared from reality as the story unfolded. I would recommend this rich story to young readers and those who are young at heart because you will not leave the story without a happy sigh and without an eagerness to continue with the series.

Just as good as the first time....

I was blessed the 1st time I read this book. I loved it with all the turns & up coming tales. I imagined the faces of these characters that now that I hear the story I see the same faces & know I still love this story.

Now it’s off to hear the next book can’t wait...

Thank you for letting me come along this journey.

Beautifully written story proving Mermaids are real.

Strong world and character development. Mermaid's must keep in contact with salt water, the saltier the better. This makes life difficult for them. Targa lives with her mother and her mother thinks her daughter will never make the change to Mermaid. On a trip to a restoration dive in the Baltic, she falls into the water and drowns. She awakens underwater able to breath hear and see perfectly. Her new life starts.
