Publisher's summary

Miss Philippa Wilson's lot in life isn't what she'd choose, but being an upstairs maid for a wealthy baron is better than living on the streets. Little does she know, her lackluster days are about to become decidedly more interesting...and dangerous. When a madman wants Philippa dead, it's going to take more than the plan of her good-hearted employer to save her and find out why she's being targeted. It's going to take a hero...or maybe a rogue.

Beauregard Boudreaux is a notorious rogue, living uneventful days and terribly scandalous nights with little thought to settling down. He needs nothing more than a strong drink, a beautiful mistress, and a spirited card game to be happy. When he intervenes to rescue a friend's upstairs maid from a killer, he's drawn into a game of cat and mouse with the maid used as bait to draw out the killer. But the more time Beau spends with Philippa as her protector, the more he has an irresistible attraction to this mysterious woman.

But Beau has lost too much in life to risk being hurt again. He can't let himself fall in love, not even with the temptation Philippa presents to him. And bloody hell, she is oh-so tempting....

Contains mature themes.

loved it!

I loved this series. I listened to one book after the other. the stories were paced well and this author doesn't treat her readers like idiots so you can solve the mysteries yourself.

Unique!

I imagined there was going to be some kind of twist to make it “okay” for a maid to marry a gentleman, but I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of class centered angst. While it was there, it wasn’t the over arching conflict driver and their world of friends/employers made this tale more believable for the time period.

Narrator did a good job with it.

Loved this book. Spellbinding

I did not expect to like this book so much. From the first sentence to the last, I listened to every word with intense interest. The story had intrigue, murder, mystery, suspense, and of course love. There was not one passage that I could fast forward through as every word counted. Lauren Smith did not disappoint.

Great story!!!

I loved the characters. I loved the love story itself. One of my favorite books. I loved the whole rouge storylines/books. The rouges are endearing especially Ashton and Charles. I hope there is more to come in from this series.

GOOD STORY

Enjoyed characters & Liked the different storyline to usual ones & introductions of true villains. There was a lot of anti-establishment to English protocol, which gave the story more depth. There needed to be more variation in voices, men sounded too much like women, a little distracting. Other than that it’s a nice little love story with villains.

The narrator hurt the enjoyment of the story.

The narration was given in such an unemotional and monotone manner that it seemed to pour ice water on my imagination. I really don’t like to speak ill of anyone but in this case it is unavoidable, the narrator lessened the enjoyment of the story.

🙄

Interesting premise, but overly dramatic & such an awful MMC!
My eyes hurt from all the rolling.

This series has been such a disappointment. A few books have a great start, but in almost every single one, except for the Scot, the "gentleman is an incredible cad... and then he is excused and rewarded for his despicable behavior. No wonder young men ate so screwed up if females view this as acceptable.

The nail in the coffin for this book comes at the end when the League F-ups so spectacularly. These seasoned men who rescue countless people fail to keep their eyes on the 2 most important characters? really? Come on! 🙄🙄🙄🙄
