About this listen

In Nebula Award-winning author Sam J. Miller’s devastating debut short-fiction collection—featuring an introduction by Amal El-Mohtar—queer infatuation, inevitable heartbreak, and brutal revenge seamlessly intertwine. Whether innocent, guilty, or not even human, the boys, beasts, and men roaming through Miller’s gorgeously crafted worlds can destroy listeners, yet leave them wanting more.

Despite his ability to control the ambient digital cloud, a foster teen falls for a clever con-man. Luring bullies to a quarry, a boy takes clearly enumerated revenge through unnatural powers of suggestion. In the aftermath of a shapeshifting alien invasion, a survivor fears that he brought something out of the Arctic to infect the rest of the world. A rebellious group of queer artists create a new identity that transcends even the anonymity of death.

Sam J. Miller shows his savage wit, unrelenting candor, and lush imagery in this essential career retrospective collection, taking his place alongside legends of the short-fiction form such as Carmen Maria Machado, Carson McCullers, and Jeff VanderMeer.

Poignant, painful, real.

Great collection of short stories. I wondered if the author had really written all of these himself for a bit, his ability to speak to the experiences of such a broad array of people and backgrounds seeming too much for one person. Ironic that a handful of these short stories seemed to predict my musing and beat me to it.

Beautiful book with unique stories

I think all of the short stories are good, though some stick with me more than others, but overall, I’d really recommend it, I’m planning to listen to it again soon

Love It, Please Write More

Each story is imaginative, emotional, and well written. We need more from this author, not the cheap thrills some other authors churn out.

good queer short stories

Spec fiction, horror and rich backgrounds. the collection has a bit of everything. A little more heavily weighted to HIV AIDS era in latter half of stories, but it was done well.
Made me think of American Horror Stories NYC at times

wonderful short story collection

The stories in this book were not always comfortable. But that is not always the point. What they are is imaginative and really good. For me, I was very happy that I listened to every story in this book. It is more than worth the time.

Unique ideas throughout

So original but also had some cohesion as you go along. Very good fantasy and sci-fi with a bit of horror and mystery.
