About this listen

Three women.
One man.
A whole lot of monsters.

Malem is a breaker. He breaks the minds of beasts, exerting the steel vise of his will over their own, bending them to his wishes.

His ability is severely limited in terms of the types of creatures he can control and how many. Most monsters have always been beyond him.

And then one day he accidentally breaks a monster girl. Doors begin to open for him faster than he thought possible.

Note: This book contains harem elements. The main character certainly isn't shy around women, and the magic system is unique in ways you might not expect. Also, the story can get a tad dark in places.

Fun but

To much combat for my taste, there are times the combat goes on for probably over an hour at a time without stop.

This is for Monster breaker books 1-3
First off I love this series! It’s got interesting well thought out mechanics, especially the monster breaking mechanics, you can tell the author has put a lot of thought and care into this series. Only complaint for the writing is a fight can go on for around an hour or so and makes me start to tune out a little sometimes.
Narration is decent but near book 3 he starts running out of voices and reuses some of them (especially annoying when it’s a voice he uses for a main female character and uses it for a new male character of a different race)

Decent enough

Story was good enough to keep me listening. The only problem I had with it was the harem. I knew it was a harem book going into it but the more I listened the more I wish it had stopped at the first girl. Would have made the whole story more compelling. Maybe it was just wasted potential at a good romance story? Ehh it was worth a token, won’t be getting the next books tho.

A Surprisingly Mature Harem

Obviously, this is a harem story. Girls on the cover surrounding our MC, I thought I knew what this would be all about. Well, I only mostly knew what is was about.

The main character; Malum, is a well nuanced character who I felt had some real depth to him. A man who knows what he wants, and is absolutely not afraid to take it; he's not the shining knight a lot of main characters are. In fact, during the first arc of the book, I found myself thinking he was kind of scummy more than once. That did not last, and I was strongly emphasizing with him halfway through the story.

Luke Daniels did an amazing job bringing the characters, like he always does.

The ladies were all unique, with blatantly different personalities, again helped by the masterful performance.

Breaker was a damn good ride, and I'll be back for more.

Ok harem novel

As always, excellent character voice work by Luke Daniels.

The author really needs to learn that character dialogue should not use narrative description - that is, people generally don't describe an event the way an author would, with flowery prose. They're far more informal.

It also feels odd that the series is called "Monster Breaker". I got the distinct feeling that the author really wanted to call the series "Monster Tamer", but thought that was too overdone, and so he looked for synonyms.

Another odd choice is that the author chose to make alterations to what orcs and goblins are called, but went whole hog with other D&D create types: there are dire wolves and dragons, and even metallic dragons (gold dragons, silver dragons, and so on). If you're just going to dip into the standard compendium of races and monsters, just call them what people are used to.

Sometimes, the main character seems like a hero, a man of upstanding moral character. Other times, he makes choices that are uncomfortable to contemplate. It's not part of some sort of arc of character growth - it's just that in some ways, he is an utter "a-hole".

Which, strangely, is a word that appears in the book. One of a number of times where the feeling of old-timey high fantasy is utterly dispelled with a dash of anachronicity.

I did like the ending battle. There were some nice developments there.

And you do have a hero with a harem of sexy girls, so that's cool.

All in all, it's an ok harem novel, but not my favorite.

a good start

right so let me get this out of the way right now as much as I love Luke Daniels The Voice he chose for our hero in this one was fucking aggravating with his Batman growl there are a number of annoying little nip pics like the whole Beast breaker thing and Suns hand's breath thing that I get I'm supposed to be fantasy terms that exist in the world to make it feel more alive and Rio and yada yada yada but every time this came up it literally just ruined the whole experience it felt like we had to stop the story to explain this arbitrary thing he threw in there that felt out of place and kind of weird however all that aside I had fun I like their hero I loved our ladies there was genuine tension and concern for a lot of what was going on I'm excited about the next book

Good book! not my speed.

I like the book in the beginning and tore the most part and basically all of it the Final Chapter and the twist I found to be a kind of boring, and frankly found it unnecessary but as I'm lazy and I'm not going to write my full opinion I didn't like the ending I think the book could have done better should have been more realistic most people would love it I didn't like it.

13 - 18 YEAR OLD VERY GOOD BOOK

VERY LIGHT READING BUT ENJOYABLE. I FINISHED IT OUT OF CURIOSITY TO SEE HOW AUTHOR WRAPPED UP THE ENDING.

Slow start

The story stars out a bit slow before it settles into a world that makes sense. The harem elements don’t interfere with the story and I found that as the story progressed that the world filled in more the background to each character makes sense. As far as the reader, he does a “lone gunman” voice for the main character. Trying to be very Clint Eastwood. The female characters all have “accents” that don’t sound very female but are distinct. Which is the best part of the performance you can always easily tell which character is speaking. I think the series has potential so I’m looking forward to listening to the next book. The combat is well done in the story, as are the monster/dragon descriptions. I could have done without the monkey pet, that character seems to only have the purpose of being a perverted pet and an excuse for how the MC can pick pocket things. I wondered too why Abigail is so bent on helping the Alliance, other than the obvious “we need to band together to survive”.
