full of mystery and suspense

This is the second book in the Quint Mitchell Mystery series, but it worked well as a standalone. Quint Mitchell is a private investigator from Florida whose hunt for the Heartthrob Bandit, who preys on older, wealthy ladies for their money, leads him to South Carolina where he becomes involved in a bitter public and media-fuelled conflict between science and religion centering around some archaeological findings while also pursuing a serial arsonist in the historic town of Allendale. Interweaving these three different strands of investigation worked very well and kept the story moving along at a nice pace. Quint is a very likable, multi-layered character and with the supporting cast of the well defined inhabitants of this historic town that is steeped in Southern charm, it was easy to become engaged in this mix of history, mystery, drama, action and humor. The writing flows effortlessly and is very descriptive so you can really see the places, the people and the action. There were some great twists and turns to keep listeners/readers on their toes and the plot adequately unpredictable, tense and suspenseful.

Curt Simmons was great as a narrator. Not only was his pacing and intonation excellent, but his distinct male as well as female voices and accents were spot on for the wide variety of characters covering the young, the old and the in-betweens. The women sounded like authentic females. I would definitely listen to other books narrated by him. There were no production issues.

I would certainly recommend this to anybody who likes sound detective stories wrapped in bits of history with realistic characters and full of mystery and suspense.

Whodunnit?

I enjoyed this book. It's not quite as quickly moving as I would expect, but the story was intriguing and kept me guessing for most of the book. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life. I will be checking out more from both the author and narrator in the future.
