About this listen
The first book in the highly anticipated Elemental World series, by Elizabeth Hunter, author of the best-selling Elemental Mysteries.
In a world teetering on the edge of change, two beings struggle to find their purpose. Will their paths lead them closer together or tear their worlds apart? For a thousand years, powerful earth vampire Carwyn ap Bryn has served others. God. His family. His friends. But tragedy and loss disrupt his peaceful existence, causing him to question everything he has committed his eternity to.
Brigid Connor has known about vampires since they rescued her from a painful childhood. But not even their vast elemental power can save her from the demons that torment her. As loyalties are tested and new paths are forged, a lurking danger slowly grows in the Elemental World. Carwyn and Brigid learn that even secrets revealed can come back to haunt you when you least expect it.

Story
No secret stays hidden forever. A phone call from an old friend sets mysterious book researcher Giovanni Vecchio back on the path of a mystery that has eluded him for centuries. Little does he suspect a young librarian holds the key to an ancient secret, nor could he expect the danger Beatrice De Novo would attract. Now both will follow a twisted maze leading from the archives of a university library, through the fires of Renaissance Florence, and toward a passion that could destroy them both.

Story
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Story
For Kate Mitchell, finishing her master's thesis on reclusive photographer Reed O'Connor was just another item to check off her list. She knew exactly what she was doing. Or did she? There's just one portrait that doesn't fit. One portrait... and the passion she sees behind it. Finding the story behind O'Connor's picture becomes Kate's obsession, and the people she meets will challenge everything she thought she knew about life, love, and inspiration. A single picture can tell more than one story.

Promised to the power-hungry god Mortdh, the young Annani is determined to find a way out of the prearranged political union that would one day put Mortdh on the throne. Even though Khiann is the son of a merchant and not a member of the leading circle, the handsome young god is a much more appealing choice. Now all she has to do is convince him that she is worth chancing an all-out civil war over succession and, possibly, his very life.

Sabina's latest mission is uncomfortably complex and threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races. Joy Randall's Top-five tips for vampire hunters: Location, location, location. Vampires won't be caught dead (ha!) in places like discos, 10-minute lube shops, or Switzerland. Remember, if you wouldn't be there, neither would a bloodsucker. Trust your eyes. You know the handsome, annoyingly arrogant, self-assured man in the shadows with long hair and a cleft in his chin? He's your vampire. No matter how tempting it might be, do not "accidentally" acquire a paper cut on your finger and suggest your vampire kiss it to make it better....

My first audio book experience
This was my first audio book ever. I am an avid old fashioned, page turning book reader so the narration took me a bit to get used to. I found it ridiculous in the beginning. The same person reading different genders and accents was distracting to me. I had to really focus on the story to get me past how silly the main characters voice was portrayed. This isn't at all the fault of the narrator, you can only adjust your voice so many ways. But I was immediately turned off by the this.
However, much to the credit of the story, I was able to stick with it and found myself looking forward to plugging in to listen while cleaning the house or running errands.
The story itself was a little heavy on filler and a little lacking in substance, but it was a good story line and I was able to easily imagine what wasn't provided by the author. My genera of choice is historical fiction so I am used to heavy detail and accurate historical references. This is a modern day story so there wasn't much explanation needed and that left me wanting.
Nevertheless I will continue on with this series and if modern fantasy is your jam, give this one a go.

Vampires
I read the 2nd book 1st, bc I mistakenly thought it was the 2nd book to another series by this writer. I am so glad I accidently started this series bc it is fantastic! I just finished the 1st book and like the 2nd it was great, you can definitely read them as stand alone but you miss nuances and certain subject matter if not read in order. I am about to purchase the 3rd book now and can't wait!! I am sure I will also continue with what is listed as another Rental series which seems more like an offshoot of this one.
This book and series are DEFINITELY worth the credit or cost, if you like the paranormal/vampire stuff and mysteries, which I do!!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A bit tedious
This was listed as #1 in the series, but after being bombarded with a slew of characters, I checked again. It’s #1 in a new series spinning off from an old. Confusion explained, but the story dragged on in fits & starts. The narrator did fairly well w multiple accents and kept me from giving up a third of the way through the slog.
