About this listen
As her weak and battered body lay paralyzed on the mattress in her master bedroom, Michelle's boyfriend’s blood dripped from the lacerations on his hands onto her bruised and mangled face. Using what little energy she had left, she broke free from his grasp and fell to her knees, begging God to forgive Paul for what he was doing and to make him stop. Paul simply laughed and replied, “God isn’t going to help you now.” In that instant, Michelle saw her life flash before her eyes and wondered how she got there…again. But I Love Him is a painful yet inspirational true story of a strong, independent woman caught in the horrifying cycle of domestic violence and how she got out.
In this audiobook, Michelle shares the details of her struggle with genuine honesty, taking the listener on a twisted journey of love, pain, and unyielding brutality that eventually leads…to peace. Mixing statistics, research, and resource with her own account, she shows just how far someone in her situation can sink, why it happens, and how they can always pick themselves back up. Those who hear Michelle's story will walk away with a newfound understanding about the horrors of domestic violence, how to escape and how to build a new, healthier life.

Story
Kelly Sundberg’s husband, Caleb, was a funny, warm, supportive man and a wonderful father to their little boy Reed. He was also vengeful and violent. But Sundberg did not know that when she fell in love, and for years told herself he would get better. It took a decade for her to ultimately accept that the partnership she desired could not work with such a broken man. In her remarkable book, she offers an intimate record of the joys and terrors that accompanied her long, difficult awakening, and presents a haunting, heartbreaking glimpse into why women remain too long in dangerous relationships.

Story
As little girls, we dream of one day becoming a ballerina, a doctor; or a lawyer. We dream of having it all - a wonderful husband, beautiful children, a dog, the perfect house with a picket white fence. You know, the classic fairy-tale that most little girls fantasize about with their friends. This might not be your story, but is definitely mine. Maybe you can relate to some things or none at all. The end result of this story is an unhealthy, unhappy relationship that mutates into abuse.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. For more than two years, BBC Radio 4's The Archers ran a disturbing storyline centred on Helen Tichener's abuse at the hands of her husband Rob. Not the kind of abuse that leaves a bruise, but the sort of coercive control that breaks your spirit and makes it almost impossible to walk away. As she listened to the unfolding story, Helen Walmsley-Johnson was forced to confront her own agonising past. Helen's first husband controlled her life, from the people she saw to what was in her bank account.

Story
It was 1969, and all the rules were changing, when Betty, a woefully single French teacher on Long Island, met the handsome but edgy new teacher at her school -- a hippie just back from Woodstock. His vitality opened up a new world to her, but when they married his rages turned against her, and often ended with physical violence. Like millions of women who discover they've married an abusive man, Betty was forced to make daily decisions to suppress her feelings or risk confrontation, to keep it secret or report, and ultimately, to live with it or leave. Part gripping story, part warm-hearted look at the '70s, and part therapeutic journey.

By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war.

Story
With Normal Gets You Nowhere, Kelly Cutrone invites us to get our freak on. History is full of successful, world-changing people who did not fit in. Think Nelson Mandela, Joan of Arc, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, John Lennon, and Rosa Parks. Instead of changing themselves to accommodate the status quo or what others thought they should be, these people hung a light on their differences - and changed humanity in the process. “I know you don’t feel normal, so why are you trying to act it and prove to everyone you are?” Cutrone says.

Meh... but so much potential
There was no character development for Paul. All we saw was the crazed abusive side of him. It was hard to see how she could have fallen for him. His character traits and personality weren't described very well. It would have been nice to have had scenes from his point of view maybe. There was also too much time spent on regurgitating statistics from people's books. Just tell me a story. We don't need your Psychological magazine quotes. I can Google that stuff myself. I just want to hear a good story.

Blah!
Narrator's voice was whiny, overly breathy with enough intonation. Once she started in with the God stuff, I noped out .
