Publisher's summary

For fans of You’ll Grow Out of It, this comedic patchwork of flash-prose, essay, and poetry snapshots a millennial performance artist’s journey from late bloomer to adult, inviting twenty-something women to embrace their self-worth, sexuality, and own-your-weird mentality.

Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, way too close to the Hollywood dream machine, Jenna Tico’s self-esteem wanes to invisibility when her identity becomes enmeshed with validation from celebrities and spiritual F-boys . . . until she claws her way back to empowerment. Here, Tico shares vulnerable personal essays, stories, and poetry—all grouped following the cycles of the moon—chronicling her journey from late bloomer to full grownup.

Observing the world of twenty-something relationships from perspectives as diverse as a bachelorette houseboat, a music festival afterparty, and the airplane ride to a death bed, she validates the experiences of women who feel like they have been abandoned by the generation that came before them. Her self-reflective stories encourage healthy life choices for young women without telling them where, what, or how to live their lives—and always with a healthy dash of humor on the side.

Simultaneously hilarious and poignant (without the whiff of morality play), Cancer Moon invites readers to embrace their twenties—aka the “age of wallowing”—as a humorous and necessary step toward understanding how we become who we want to be in the world.

Nourishment for the active mind and tender heart!

I’m so inspired!!!

Cancer Moon was chef’s kiss amazing!

I’m so in love with the way Jenna curates ideas with her words. Her visceral and playful descriptions elevate the mundane to sacred and ground the sacred into the earth and our bodies.

My ears drank up her voice as my brain consumed and processed the concepts. Neurons firing to connect and assemble meaning beyond what was presented as I drove from job to job or prepared meals. Sparking so many emotions and insights for me as someone who has had similar experiences but is still yet to be a wife or birth a child from my body. In this regard it also offers hope alongside pragmatic realism.

My unmediated neurospicy brain often needed to hit the 30secs back button to catch something missed when my mind would drift into fantasy or be distracted by life outside my car or the dishes I was washing. It felt important to hear every word, to pay attention to the tones. Jenna did an amazing job of speaking her truth and voice acting. Her careful and diligent performance enhanced the audio book experience!

I feel honored to have been able to experience the peek into Jenna’s inner world and past she so generously has gifted anyone who listens to or reads Cancer Moon.

I am extending my deepest gratitude for her diligence and bravery!
