About this listen

In this spellbinding new novel of suspense from New York Times bestselling author James Grippando, Miami's top prosecutor becomes a prime suspect in his wife's disappearance, which may have a chilling connection to the woman he can't forget.

Unbelievable was the word for her. Samantha Vine was unbelievably beautiful. It was unbelievable that she'd married me. Even more unbelievable that she was gone...

Samantha died too soon. Abe Beckham's new wife has helped him through the loss, but some say it was a step back for Abe to marry Angelina, a love from his past. Abe doesn't want to hear it, and he's even managed to remain a star prosecutor at the Miami State Attorney's Office through his ups and downs.

Then everything goes wrong. A woman's body is discovered dumped in the Everglades, and Abe is called upon to monitor the investigation. The FBI is tracking a killer in South Florida they call "Cutter" because his brutal methods hark back to Florida's dark past, when machete-wielding men cut sugarcane by hand in the blazing sun.

When Angelina goes missing, the respected attorney finds himself under fire. Suspicion surrounds him. His closest friends, family, professional colleagues, and the media no longer trust his motives. Was Angelina right? Was their marriage not what they'd hoped for because he loved Samantha too much? Or was there another woman... and a husband with a dark side who simply wanted his new wife gone?

Read thru in. one night

Couldn't put it down, good book, fast paced, never knew where it was going or who the real bad guy was. Really enjoyed it.

Well crafted story with some weakness

For an author that I've never heard of, this story is extremely well written. I was pleasantly surprised by the pace and and storytelling. I must say though that I was a little let down by a somewhat abrupt end that was rather weak. But what stands out for me was the brilliant narration by Jonathan Davis. In fact, it is very likely that I rated the story higher than a 3 simply due to the performance by Davis. All in all, it is well worth the credit and I expect to download more by the author.

Tired of conniving women

I was disappointed with this book. And I am increasingly tired of the new 'woman as deceiving wives and girlfriends' mode. So many chances for a really good story tossed in favor of this hackneyed plot.

Good start, but slow at times

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The dialogue between characters Abe and JT was too superficial, repetitive, and I got tired of the yelling between them. The ending was abrupt and dissatisfying.

Would you recommend Cane and Abe to your friends? Why or why not?

No, too slow and repetitive.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes

"Careful Of Being A Good Samaritan"

Where does Cane and Abe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have one of the "Jack Swytec" stories, set on an oil rig. That book was not my cup of tea and I didn't buy more "Swytec stories.
If you did see the film " Gone Girl" and it got on your nerves, then this book is not for you. However, I felt this book had that flavor, and it was a good listen with a fast pace mystery.
This book had better writing and editing than the previous older book I had listened to from this author.
I will seek out the new #12 Swytec book from this author as the reviews were good.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes the plot kept you on the edge with hints of clues as to who dun nit.

What about Jonathan Davis’s performance did you like?

I love listening to J.D. reads, and try to buy what I can of his mystery genre. His best for me is Sandra Brown's Mean Streak. He does latin voices so well and he can interpret what an author wishes to achieve. Since he does mostly Sci Fi, I don't get much choices for J.D. mystery authors so I take what I can based on author reviews.

Any additional comments?

Boilerplate mystery

Uninteresting characters and an ending too similar to Gone Girl. The story is simply not compelling and the characters so weakly drawn, I had a difficult time trying to envision everyone.

What a mess

It starts out shaky, gets worse in the middle and falls completely apart at the end. Stay away from this book. This is my first Grippando book. Are there any that are worth a read?

Who Wrote This Book ??

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing.

What do you think your next listen will be?

One of this author's earlier novels - have been a fan for years - unfortunately, this book is too amateurish to have been written by James Grippando.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes - he is one of the best !! Difficult to compare because the dialogue on this audio was mostly screaming, yelling, raving, etc., not at all his style.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Cane and Abe?

Would have advised against publishing book.

Any additional comments?

Sorry I wasted my credit without reading the book first.
