About this listen

Eight years ago, the Sorcerer Void saved Emily's life.

To Emily, Void became, in so many ways, the father she'd never had. And yet Void kept a secret from her. To save the Allied Lands from themselves, to keep them from being destroyed by the necromancers or torn apart by their short-sighted rulers, he embarked on a plan to launch a coup and reunite the long-dead empire, a plan that can only end in total war or a permanent living death. He must be stopped.

And now, all that stands between him and his goal is his adopted daughter, Emily herself.

Gathering her allies, Emily prepares herself to return to Whitehall, to face the most dangerous opponent she has ever faced. But as she pits the new world against the old in a desperate bid to undo Void's work before it is too late, she is forced to confront a deadly truth...

Is it possible that Void might be right?

An excellent end to a series

Thank you Chris for finishing out Emily's story.

Audible's rating is:
1 Star is "not for me."
2 Stars "it is okay."
3 Stars "pretty good."
4 Stars "it's great."
5 Stars "I love it"

A 1-star book could be a very dry topic, story, crude, or someone preaching to the reader. I generally don't have 1-star books. I will return them and go my own way. My last three were from the same series, and I had hit a very dry spot in my listening.

A 2-star story would be a story that was phoned in by a writer that typically has done much better work. I have a couple of reviews from authors that just seemed to phone it in, one most recently from an author that decided to mix current politics into his novel. If I wanted that, I would just watch the news.

A 3-star review is where I start. It means I enjoyed the book. That I did not have a hard time following it (I have lost a lot of my conversational hearing). That the story kept to a plot, the characters were not static, and the world built was plausable.

A 4-star review is something that I really enjoyed. It puts the author on my map to keep an eye out for. I go through 12-15 books a month. (audible is my primary source of entertainment. ) I will search for the author's works regularly and seek out their stories for future purchases.

A 5-star review, These are not as rare as one would think. These are the books where the characters grow, learn, act according to their nature, where the world is not only plausible but believable. Where there are economic systems, businesses, and rules of law that make sense. Where the story is woven, progressed, and told with caring and dedication. These books, series, authors, and narrators bring it all in a package.

So, when reading my reviews, if anyone does, that is how I judge the books.

the only series that keeps me up at night

I find myself listening to a lot of audio books, but this series seems to the only one that can make me flip my sleeping schedule cause I can't put it down. Here i am at 4:30am writing a review .... work and the gym are going to be painful tomorrow. I'm going to be so tired.

Great storyline. Narrator mostly good

Great storyline. Narrator performs well with most characters & commentary. But, she struggles with the main male characters. If Jade, Sgt Miles and/or Void are in a conversation, you can't tell one character's voice from another. It's never enjoyable when a listener has enjoyed 19 books, just to have the narrator changed in book 20. So, I'm sure Ms Maarleveld had to endure scrutiny, due solely from listeners who were not happy with change. Also, I would not begin to presume that I personally have even an ounce of talent as a narrator/performing artist. So, I do not mean to sound as if I am personally criticizing.
However, as a listener with a 900+ book personal Audible library, I have listened to MANY narrators, and can therefore offer an opinion as a listener. In my opinion, and with no knowledge of the reasons for the change of narrators, Ms Tavia Gilbert should not have stopped with book 19. I am not sure with whom I should be disappointed. But, the last 5 books would have been much more enjoyable, if the original narrator had perforned/read.

The series that keeps on giving

Shocking that I am on book 24 and just as engaged as I was on book 1!

"inwardly"

the author really needs a thesaurus, but excellent book regardless. I loved the "Demon Headmaster" reference in chapter 22 and I'm probably one of the few that noticed since it's impossible to find it in print or audio (I had them on cassette!) unless they're on audible? I never thought to look. that was an excellent series. cheers!

Barely understood reader.

The reader has such a husky voice that is is hard to understand reader. Should listen to readers before hiring them.
