In desperation, her parents send her - and her magical sisters - to Jude's Sorcerous Academy, her last best chance to discover her powers.
But as she struggles to survive her classes without a single spell to her name, Caitlyn starts to uncover an ancient mystery that may prove the key to her true powers.... If she lives long enough to find it.

She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. Story
Elliot Richardson thought he’d lost everything. He’d come home from deployment to find his wife cheating on him, his sons strangers and his life in tatters. Driving away, unsure where he was going, he fell through an interdimensional rift and found himself in a very different world, a city of magic and mystery and dangers beyond his comprehension, a land spinning out of control. Innovations from the distant west unsettle the monarchy and challenge the position of the aristocrats and warlords who hold the kingdom in their grasp.

Story
Blessed (or cursed, depending on who you ask) with human intelligence, Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, magical talking cat extraordinaire, spends most of his time keeping his human out of trouble. Of course, having a wizard for a human means that trouble is never far away. When Sir Kipling's human goes away for the weekend and leaves him to guard her magical library, things start out quiet. But he soon discovers witches smelling suspiciously of demon magic snooping about, and quiet goes out the window as chaos looms on the horizon.

Story
Gerald Dunwoody is a wizard. Just not a particularly good one. He's blown up a factory, lost his job, and there's a chance that he's not really a Third Grade wizard after all. So it's off to New Ottosland to be the new Court Wizard for King Lional. It's a shame that King Lional isn't the vain, self-centered young man he appeared to be. With a princess in danger, a talking bird who can't stay out of trouble, and a kingdom to save, Gerald soon suspects that he might be out of his depth.

Good stuff
I’m normally a science fiction fan rather than a fantasy person, but I make an exception for Chris Nuttall’s stuff. He has innovative and very logical magic systems, with appealing characters and a knack for keeping a story moving and bringing it to a satisfying climax that ends the story and leaves me wanting the next in the series.

This is the start of yet another series that I shall have to experience. The heroin has shown remarkable courage while overcoming the trials that life keeps throwing at her. I am looking forward to the next book.

great book for young adults
great book for young readers, lots of dificuties for the character both social in school as well as how learning to deal with them at a young age helps you deal with even more dificult people as an adult. also life is not fair don't expect it to be, it is how ever what you make of it.

Exactly what I expect from Mr. Nuttal
If you were of fan of the Schooled in Magic series than you should like this one. It isn't a huge diversion from the same theme but I think it is different enough. Girl in a magic world, she believes she has shortcomings which she thinks will ruin her life, something happens or something she has learned and now she is at the top of the heap but that isn't always an easy place to be. Same ingredients as the Schooled n Magic series but the flavor is different enough to give it a listen.
